Men’s mental health matters
💔 I’m not sharing this as an expert. I’m sharing this as a mother who lost her son.
My oldest son struggled deeply with his mental health.
Like so many men, he carried pain that was difficult to put into words. He turned to alcohol to cope… to numb what he was feeling… to quiet the battles going on inside of him.
And then I lost him in a motorcycle accident because of his alcoholism.
There are no words for what it means to lose a child.
There is no sentence that can explain the emptiness. No amount of time that can erase the questions a mother carries in her heart.
And one question will always stay with me:
What if he had truly felt like it was okay to ask for help?
What if he had known that struggling didn’t make him weak?
What if he had believed that he could speak about his pain without being judged, embarrassed, or told to “man up”?
Would my son still be here?
I will never know the answer to that question.
But I do know this:
I cannot go back and change my son’s story…
but maybe I can help change someone else’s.
That is why I will speak.
I will speak for the men who are hurting in silence.
I will speak for the men using alcohol or other things to numb pain they don’t know how to explain.
I will speak for the sons who don’t know how to tell their mothers they are struggling.
I will speak for the fathers trying to hold everyone together while quietly falling apart themselves.
And I will speak for every family who should never have to wonder:
“What if we had known?”
To every man reading this:
Please don’t wait until the pain becomes unbearable.
Please don’t believe you have to fight alone.
Please don’t hide behind “I’m fine” when you are breaking inside.
Your family would rather sit beside you in your darkest moment than stand beside your grave wishing they had one more chance to save you.
💔 I would give anything for one more conversation with my son.
One more hug.
One more chance to tell him:
“You never had to carry this alone.”
So if my story reaches even one man…
If it helps one man speak…
If it helps one man ask for help…
If it gives one family more time with someone they love…
Then I will keep telling it.
For my son.
For your son.
For every man suffering in silence.
🖤 Men hurt too.
💛 Men deserve help too.
🖤 And asking for help is not weakness.
Break the silence. Before another family is left with only memories and “what ifs.”
