Ipoh
8/6 Edited to

... Read moreVisiting Ipoh for its renowned food scene is always a memorable experience, especially when you get to explore lesser-known places like a tze char dining spot tucked away in a carpark, which surprisingly attracts few tourists but serves excellent seafood dishes paired perfectly with Snow Beer. What made the experience unique was the rustic charm combined with authentic flavors that left a lasting impression. One of my personal favorites when in Ipoh is the chicken rice from Pak Kong Chicken Rice Restaurant. Following Google reviews guided me to this gem next to my hotel, and the juicy chicken complemented by perfectly cooked beansprouts and char siew made for a satisfying meal. It’s these humble yet authentic bites that truly reflect the city’s culinary heart. Another standout is the famous white coffee at Kedai Kopi Keng Nam. Having sampled white coffee all over Malaysia, the rich and soothing texture here was unforgettable. Pairing it with their much-talked-about kaya glutinous rice enhanced the experience, showcasing a harmonious blend of sweet and robust flavors that topped the trip’s coffee highlights. Don’t miss the custard pudding at Kedai Kopi Sin Yoon Loong. This dessert, reminiscent of Japanese custard, caught me by surprise in a traditional kopitiam. Its silky texture and subtle sweetness provided a comforting finish to a delicious meal and added a creative twist to classic Ipoh flavors. For takeaway delights, Aun Kheng Lim’s salted chicken is perfection. It’s known for being so tender and flavorful that it was devoured within minutes. Although takeaway only, the proximity to many hotels makes it convenient to enjoy this specialty fresh and hot. It reminded me how local specialties can make the simplest meals extraordinary. Bak Kut Teh at Restaurant Yau Li Fok presents a different style compared to Johor Bahru’s version. This Ipoh variant is more herbal and cleaner in taste, perfect to satisfy a craving without feeling heavy. Combined with other street food finds, it showed how Ipoh streets are a haven for diverse tastes. A visit to Ipoh Stables Market reveals more than just food; it’s a cultural and visual treat. Set in a horse betting stadium, this market bursts with cafes offering everything from traditional treats to modern bites. It’s a great spot for photos and sampling a variety of dishes within a unique atmosphere. Specialty cakes like cempedak at Rumah Tumpangan & Restoran Embassy make fantastic souvenirs. These cakes, rare in Singapore, carry nostalgic value and are deliciously sweet. Such local delicacies emphasize the importance of tasting and bringing home something meaningful from the journey. Exploring biscuit shops like Kedai Biskut Sin Eng Heong added a retro vibe to my food journey. Their kaya puffs and traditional pastries offer a glimpse into Ipoh’s culinary heritage. It’s worth setting aside time to grab these as snacks or gifts. Lastly, starting the trip with dim sum at Ming Court Hong Kong Dim Sum was a wise choice—arriving early helped avoid long queues. The classic dim sum selections served buffet-style contributed to a delightful and efficient meal after a long flight. All these experiences combined offer an authentic and comprehensive flavor of Ipoh’s food culture. Whether you crave traditional Malaysian dishes, unique desserts, or atmospheric markets, Ipoh caters to every food lover’s desire. The blend of hidden gems and tourist favorites makes it a city worth returning to for culinary adventures.
