Is this actually weird and creepy?

Sometimes, when I need time alone, I go to the local cemetery.

I don’t cry or wander around aimlessly. I bring gloves, wipes, and sometimes flowers. I clean neglected graves, straighten fallen decorations. If I see a name that clearly hasn’t been visited in years, I’ll leave a small card or a flower.

It started during a stressful period in my life when I just needed quiet. The cemetery felt calm in a way nothing else did. It reminded me that everyone mattered once, even if no one shows up for them anymore.

I told my husband about it casually, assuming he’d just shrug. Instead, he said it was weird. Then creepy. He asked why I’d spend my free time “around dead people” and told me it made him uncomfortable.

That reaction bothered me more than I expected. I don’t see it as morbid. I see it as grounding. It’s the one place where I feel fully present and oddly peaceful.

Now I’m questioning whether this is genuinely strange, or if he just doesn’t understand it.

So tell me honestly, would this creep you out, or does it make sense to you?

... Read moreVisiting cemeteries as a form of solitude and reflection is less common in conversation but deeply meaningful for many people. For those who feel overwhelmed by the noise and busyness of daily life, a cemetery can offer a quiet and respectful environment that fosters mindfulness and connection to life's impermanence. Cleaning neglected graves and leaving flowers or notes is a heartfelt way of honoring those who might otherwise be forgotten. It’s a humble act that acknowledges the dignity of every individual’s life story. This hobby can nurture empathy and a greater appreciation for one’s own existence and struggles. Many people find that cemeteries evoke a unique sense of calm because they represent a space free from the distractions of the living world. The stillness can help center emotions and bring a sense of peace. While some might see the presence among “dead people” as morbid or unsettling, others experience it as grounding—a reminder that life is precious and worth honoring. It’s understandable that family members or friends may react with discomfort or misunderstanding, especially if they do not relate to this way of finding calm. Explaining that this practice is not about fear or sadness but about connection, respect, and respite may help bridge this gap. Like many personal hobbies, it reflects a way to cope, reflect, and reclaim a sense of control during stressful times. This kind of purposeful solitude breaks away from typical social or recreational activities and offers a unique lens on grief, remembrance, and presence. It can inspire others to look for new ways to slow down and appreciate life’s quieter moments. Ultimately, visiting cemeteries in this respectful and caring way enriches life by honoring the past and nurturing personal peace.

I don’t find this weird at all actually. This is a very kind thing to do. Eventually everyone will experience a neglected grave as everyone gets older and passes. You’re doing a service and they probably appreciate it
