... Read moreOh my goodness, you guys, I just got back from the most incredible trip to Hawaii's Big Island, and I have to share all my favorite discoveries with you! If you're planning a trip or just dreaming of one, this island offers such a unique mix of adventure and relaxation. Here are my absolute must-do activities that made my trip unforgettable! First off, you absolutely CANNOT miss Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. Seriously, it's like stepping onto another planet. We spent a whole day exploring the Kilauea caldera, hiking through lava tubes (Thurston Lava Tube was wild!), and feeling the sheer power of the earth. Even if there's no active lava flow (which wasn't the case for us this time), the landscape itself is breathtaking and humbling. Wear sturdy shoes and bring water – you'll be doing a lot of walking! Next up, the beaches! The Big Island boasts such diverse shores. Punalu'u Black Sand Beach was a highlight for me. Imagine black sand glistening under the sun – it's surreal, and we even spotted some sea turtles basking on the sand, which was just magical (remember to keep a respectful distance!). For classic white sand, Hapuna Beach State Recreation Area was perfect for swimming and soaking up the sun. And if you're feeling adventurous, getting to Papakolea Green Sand Beach is a trek, but totally worth it for the unique experience. For water lovers, snorkeling in Kealakekua Bay was an absolute dream. The clarity of the water and the abundance of colorful fish around the Captain Cook Monument were just stunning. If you're not a strong swimmer, many boat tours offer equipment and guidance. We also took a sunset cruise that offered incredible views and even some dolphin sightings! Don't forget the waterfalls! Akaka Falls State Park is an easy and beautiful walk through lush rainforest leading to a spectacular 442-foot waterfall. Rainbow Falls, just outside Hilo, is another quick stop that’s beautiful, especially in the morning when you might see a rainbow in the mist. And let's talk about food! You have to try some authentic Kona coffee – a tour of a coffee plantation was surprisingly fascinating and delicious. For meals, I loved hitting up the local farmers' markets for fresh tropical fruits and snacks. And don't leave without trying poke bowls – fresh, flavorful, and perfect for a beach day. Finally, if you have the chance, stargazing from Mauna Kea is an otherworldly experience. Just remember it's high altitude, so dress warmly and be prepared for the cold. The sheer number of stars you can see is mind-blowing. My top tip for the Big Island? Rent a car! The island is huge, and having your own wheels gives you the freedom to explore all these incredible spots at your own pace. Pack layers, reef-safe sunscreen, and an open mind, because the Big Island truly has something for everyone. I'm already dreaming of my next visit!
