Book Review

📚Book name and Author: “It’s Elementary” Elise Bryant

Genre: mystery/ romance/ fiction

⭐️ My rating: 4/5 ⭐️

📝 My review: “It’s Elementary” highlights different circumstances such as single motherhood, coparenting, adult friendships, dating as an adult, living in a multigenerational home, what DEI looks like in schools, work-life balance, and more. I knew who the culprit was from the beginning but the spin of the plot and crime got it an extra half star. It was an easy read and had pieces of romance which is cool. I would recommend if you wanna get into mystery someway somehow and mainly read romance. I feel like even with the Epilogue there was still some unanswered questions.

📖 Intro: “Mavis Miller is not a PTA mom. She has enough on her plate with her feisty seven-year-old daughter, Pearl, an exhausting job at a nonprofit, and the complexities of a multigenerational household. So no one is more surprised than Mavis when she caves to Trisha Holbrook, the long-reigning, slightly terrifying PTA president, and finds herself in charge of the school's brand-new DEl committee. As one of the few Black parents at this California elementary school, Mavis tries to convince herself this is an opportunity for real change. But things go off the rails at the very first meeting, when the new principal's plans leave Trisha absolutely furious. Later that night, when Mavis spies Trisha in yellow rubber gloves and booties, lugging cleaning supplies and giant black trash bags to her waiting minivan, it's only natural that her mind jumps to somewhere it surely wouldn't in the light of day.

Except Principal Smith fails to show up for work the next morning, and has been MIA since the meeting.

Determined to get to the bottom of things, Mavis, along with the school psychologist with the great forearms (look, it's worth noting), launches an investigation that will challenge her views on parenting, friendship, and elementary school politics.”

... Read moreIn 'It's Elementary', Elise Bryant weaves a narrative filled with multifaceted characters and contemporary societal issues. The protagonist, Mavis Miller, unexpectedly steps into a leadership role at her child's school, revealing the dynamics of being a Black parent in a challenging environment. The story delves into complex themes such as single motherhood, work-life balance, and the importance of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) initiatives in educational settings. The backdrop of a missing principal ignites Mavis's determination to investigate and ultimately discover deeper truths about her community and herself. Readers will find the blend of mystery with relatable life experiences not only entertaining but also thought-provoking. The book's approachable language and engaging storyline make it a perfect entry point for those new to the mystery genre while still offering depth for seasoned readers. Bryant's ability to combine humor with serious life lessons ensures that this book resonates with a diverse audience, making it a recommended read for anyone interested in contemporary fiction that reflects real-life challenges.
