I can’t tell you how many times I’ve drooled over recipes like the creamy peanut udon recipe that ThrivingOnPlants posted on TikTok even though I’m allergic to peanuts/tree nuts.
In the past, I’ve subbed out peanut butter for sunflower seed butter but the taste just wasn’t my favorite. Then I saw someone post creamy Tahini noodles on here and I knew I had to try it!
Tahini has been an absolute game changer! So much better than sunflower butter in savory dishes and it absolutely delivers on that nutty taste. To all my nut allergy girlies, please try Tahini if you’ve been wanting to try creamy peanut noodle recipes, it’s so good hot or cold!
ThrivingOnPlants Sauce Recipe:

• 1 tsp grated ginger (I just use a sprinkle of ginger powder)

Mix all the sauce ingredients together and add your favorite noodles! I really like udon noodles but any are fine 🩷
... Read moreFinding delicious, creamy noodle dishes when you're avoiding peanut butter, whether due to allergies or dietary preferences, can feel like a real quest. I've been there, drooling over recipes but knowing they were off-limits. But trust me, you don't have to miss out on that satisfying, savory experience! I've discovered a few tricks and alternatives that make whipping up a truly sensational nut-free creamy sauce a breeze.
My absolute go-to, as you've seen, is tahini. It’s a game-changer, especially for savory dishes where you want that deep, earthy creaminess without any nuts. Tahini, made from ground sesame seeds, has a naturally rich, slightly bitter, and incredibly smooth texture that mimics peanut butter surprisingly well in cooked sauces. When you're buying tahini, look for brands that are relatively thin and pourable; thicker tahini can make your sauce too paste-like. Good quality tahini mixes effortlessly into dressings and sauces, creating that perfect consistency for your nut-free creamy tahini noodles. Plus, it's packed with healthy fats, protein, and minerals like calcium – a delicious bonus!
While tahini is my star player, I know some of you might be looking for other options or want to experiment. I've tried various nut-free alternatives over the years, and here are a few that stand out:
Sunflower Seed Butter (SunButter): The original article mentioned trying this, and while it's a solid nut-free choice, it can sometimes have a strong, slightly bitter aftertaste in savory dishes. My tip? Balance it out! Add more acidity (like extra lime juice or a splash of rice vinegar) and more potent spices (ginger, garlic, chili) to cut through that flavor. Roasting the sunflower seeds lightly before processing them into butter can also mellow the taste.
White Bean Puree: This might sound unusual, but pureed cannellini beans (great northern beans also work) can create an incredibly creamy and neutral base for sauces. They're rich in fiber and protein and pick up flavors beautifully. Just blend cooked beans with a bit of water or broth until super smooth, then incorporate your desired seasonings.
Avocado: For a fresh, healthy, and ultra-creamy sauce, blended avocado is fantastic. It adds a beautiful green hue and a richness that's hard to beat. Combine it with lime juice, cilantro, and a hint of spice for a vibrant, no-cook creamy sauce.
Pumpkin Seed Butter (Pepita Butter): Similar to sunflower seed butter, this offers a unique nutty-earthy flavor. It tends to be a bit greener and can be used similarly to tahini, though its flavor profile is distinct. I find it works wonderfully in sauces with a Mexican or Southwestern twist.
No matter which base you choose, here are some general tips for making your nut-free creamy noodle sauces truly spectacular:
Adjust Consistency: Always have some hot water or vegetable broth on hand. This is your secret weapon for achieving the perfect pourable consistency. Add it gradually until your sauce is just right for coating your noodles.
Layer Flavors: Don't be shy with aromatics like fresh ginger and garlic. A little extra kick from your favorite chili oil or a dash of black vinegar can elevate the entire dish. And don't forget a squeeze of fresh lime juice – it brightens everything up!
Toppings are Key: While the sauce is the star, toppings add texture and visual appeal. Besides a sprinkle of toasted sesame seeds (which tie in nicely with tahini!), consider finely chopped green onions, fresh cilantro, crispy fried shallots, or even some crushed, roasted seaweed for an umami hit.
This tahini sauce isn't just for noodles, either! It's incredibly versatile. I often whip up a double batch and use it as a dressing for big salads, a dipping sauce for roasted vegetables or spring rolls, or even a marinade for tofu or chicken. Whether you enjoy your creamy tahini noodles hot or cold, this nut-free hack will open up a world of delicious possibilities. You absolutely have to try it!
