... Read moreAs an immigrant parent myself, I've often reflected on the question: do we move to Canada primarily for our children? This question gains even more complexity when we consider the idea that some immigrant parents might be stepping back from their roles. From my experience and observations, immigration comes with unique pressures that can affect parenting styles and involvement. Many immigrant families face the challenge of balancing work and family life, often working long hours to establish financial stability. This can inadvertently lead to parents having less time and energy to engage deeply with their children, which some may interpret as 'resignation' from their roles. Additionally, cultural adjustments and the struggle to navigate a new society can create stress that affects family dynamics. However, it's important to remember that immigrant parents usually have immense pride and commitment to their children's future. They often encourage educational achievement and cultural values, sometimes in ways that might not be immediately visible or recognized within the new environment. Moreover, immigrant parents might face language barriers and lack of extended family support, further complicating their ability to actively participate in their children's daily lives compared to what they might have experienced back home. From conversations in community groups and personal encounters, many parents express a strong desire to be involved but feel overwhelmed by the demands of adapting to a new country. Support systems like community centers, cultural associations, and school programs can be vital in helping these parents reconnect and strengthen their roles. Understanding the reasons behind what seems like parental detachment is crucial for building supportive environments. It requires empathy and the creation of resources that help immigrant families thrive both economically and socially. This ensures that the decision to immigrate to Canada continues to be a hopeful journey for parents striving to provide the best for their children.
