me in real life most days
Living as an autistic adult in today’s world can be a mix of unique challenges and rewarding moments. From my daily experiences, I find that the most important thing is embracing who I am authentically, even when it means explaining my needs or behaviors to others. Simple routines and familiar environments provide a comforting structure that helps manage sensory sensitivities and energy levels. One thing that many autistic adults relate to is the need for clear communication and understanding. I’ve learned to advocate for myself by expressing when I need breaks or quiet time, which has made a significant difference in both social and work settings. It’s also been helpful to connect with communities, whether online or in person, where I can share experiences and tips with others who truly understand. Another everyday reality is managing sensory overloads—whether it’s loud noises, bright lights, or crowded places. Using noise-canceling headphones or having a safe space to retreat to can make those situations more manageable. It’s important for friends, family, and colleagues to recognize these needs without judgment. Sharing these insights is part of building awareness and acceptance, not just for others but for myself as well. Living authentically, embracing quirks, and nurturing self-compassion keep me grounded on both good days and challenging ones. For anyone else navigating life as an autistic adult, know that your experiences are valid and there is a supportive community out there ready to listen and share.
