Is this your go-to spot, or not?

3 days agoEdited to

... Read moreAs a surgical technologist, the spot where you open blades can genuinely impact the flow and safety of your work. Many professionals develop a consistent habit or 'go-to spot' that helps streamline their actions while maintaining sterility. For me, having a designated, easily accessible, and stable area to open blades without risk of contamination or accidental injury is vital. From personal experience, a go-to spot is usually close to the sterile field but arranged to minimize crowding around the surgical site. Some prefer to open blades on a separate Mayo stand or a side table covered with a sterile drape to keep everything organized and prevent cross-contamination. It's important to keep in mind that opening blades requires focused attention because any mishap can compromise the sterile environment or cause personal injury. Whether you use a specific folding technique or scissors to open the packaging, adopting a consistent spot helps build muscle memory and reduces distraction. Sharing tips with fellow surgical techs also reveals a variety of preferences based on OR setups. Some find it useful to mark their preferred opening area subtly or organize their instruments in a way that naturally guides them to the blade opening spot. If you're still figuring out your favorite location, consider factors like easy reach, sterility maintenance, and personal comfort. Observation and practice will let you know when you've found the spot that makes your surgical prep efficient and smooth. Because, really, if you know, you KNOW.
