Tech & Society: Systemic vs. Interpersonal Ableism ♿️🏫✨

If you are trying to understand accessibility and social justice, breaking down these two terms is a game-changer. Here is the simple guide to how bias operates against disabled people on different levels:

🏛️ 1. Systemic Ableism (The Environment)

This refers to how society’s institutions, laws, and designs create barriers. It’s when the "system" itself favors non-disabled people.

How it looks: Inflexible hybrid-work policies, public transit systems without elevators, or digital apps that don't support closed captions.

🗣️ 2. Interpersonal Ableism (The Interaction)

This is about individual attitudes, assumptions, and language during daily social interactions.

How it looks: Speaking to a disabled adult like they are a child, ignoring their personal autonomy, or using microaggressions in conversation.

💡 The Takeaway:

Systemic ableism is a structural issue; interpersonal ableism is a behavioral issue. To make our communities truly inclusive, we have to check our personal language and vote for accessible design in our cities and workplaces!

... Read moreIn my journey toward understanding ableism deeper, I realized that recognizing the subtle differences between systemic and interpersonal ableism is essential for meaningful change. Systemic ableism embeds itself within societal structures—from housing and education to transportation—often creating invisible walls that block accessibility and equal opportunities. For example, inaccessible public transit systems or discriminatory pay laws systematically disadvantage disabled people, unnoticeable unless you consciously look. On the other hand, interpersonal ableism is the bias encountered in everyday social interactions—like when someone talks down to a disabled person, assumes they need unsolicited help, or uses language that dismisses invisible disabilities. Such experiences are frustrating because they undermine autonomy and dignity. One practical step I've embraced is actively recognizing my own microaggressions and educating myself on language preferences to avoid unintentionally perpetuating harm. It’s about shifting mindset and behavior concurrently—supporting policies that promote accessible design, while also fostering respectful and empowered communication. The examples of ableism mentioned—including segregating students or ignoring personal language preferences—highlight how deeply ingrained these issues are. Advocating for affordable systemic housing and inclusive education programs is just as vital as rethinking how we engage respectfully in conversations and social settings. Ultimately, building truly inclusive communities requires both policy reform and personal growth. By challenging systemic barriers and our own attitudes, we can contribute to a society where disabled people not only gain access but are genuinely valued and heard.
