Is this normal to everyone?

I’ve been with my partner for a decade, he’s kind, smart, and we’ve built a life together. We moved cities, traveled, picked up new hobbies, even started businesses. Outwardly, it’s full but inwardly we’re just co-existing.

There’s no intimacy in our life. We had that honeymoon phase spark, then 1-2 times a week for years until the pandemic hit. Now it’s once every four months and it feels like a chore: “Oh, it’s Valentine’s, we should check this box.” I’ve tried talking about it but he shuts down even gets offended when I suggest new things.

I don’t find him attractive anymore. Physically, he’s the same, but the passion that drew me to him is gone. I plan all our social stuff: birthdays, trips, date nights because he never does. I’d rather hang with friends or alone than with him.

I love him as a person but I’m not in love. Attraction aren’t everything, but I don’t want to be celibate forever. He thinks couples therapy means the relationship’s over, so that’s off the table.

How do you tell if it’s a rough patch or the end?

#Letschat #Asklemon8 #LongTermRelationship

2025/11/17 Edited to

... Read moreExperiencing a shift from passionate intimacy to feeling like 'just platonic roommates' is a challenge many long-term couples face. It’s normal for the honeymoon spark to evolve as years pass, but the drastic drop in intimacy and emotional connection, especially if triggered by life stressors like the pandemic, can feel painful and confusing. When physical affection diminishes to once every few months and emotional engagement fades, it often signals an underlying disconnect rather than just a phase. The feeling of co-existing without real intimacy, as described in the phrase ‘long term relationship feels like we're just platonic roommates,’ is a common but painful experience. This can lead to questions like, “Is this normal to everyone?” or “How do you know if your relationship is ending or just going through a rough patch?” It’s important to understand that both partners contribute to relationship dynamics. Avoiding conversations about intimacy or shutting down when discussing feelings, as mentioned where one partner gets offended by suggestions, often prevents healing and deeper connection. Proactive communication, even if difficult, is a crucial part of navigating these issues. Another aspect to consider is individual attraction and emotional fulfillment. Even if a partner’s appearance hasn’t changed, feelings of lost passion can stem from unmet emotional needs or lack of shared activities that once bonded the couple. Taking initiative to plan social events or date nights demonstrates desire to maintain connection but also highlights imbalance in relationship investment. Couples therapy can be a helpful tool, though some fear it means the relationship’s demise. On the contrary, it often offers a safe space to explore feelings, improve communication, and rediscover intimacy. If you find yourself wondering whether this is a temporary rough patch or an irreversible shift, look for signs like willingness to communicate, effort to reconnect, and shared goals for the relationship. Sometimes, time and intentional work can rekindle love, but other times, accepting the change is necessary for personal happiness. Remember, being ‘in love’ and loving someone as a person are different. It’s okay to seek fulfillment and connection that meet your needs. Talking to trusted friends, support groups, or counselors might provide perspective and support. Each relationship is unique, but you’re not alone in facing these challenges, and many have navigated through to stronger paths or kinder conclusions.

There’s a-lot more we go through that stays unsaid. We need to share more of those realistic moments and know we are all struggling in the same way, it’s sad that society has made these common and normalized in motherhood. It’s just another reason to believe that we are amazing.🩷
