Anti-Blackness While Traveling as a Mom
Traveling should feel like a break, but sometimes the reality is different.
Anti-Blackness can show up in the very first interaction—
in the way people look at you, speak to you, or make assumptions.
And it’s like… excuse me?
I’m human too.
My babies are too.
Just treat us that way.
If you know, you know. 🤍
Traveling as a Black mom often comes with challenges that many might not anticipate. While trips are meant to be relaxing and joyful, encountering anti-Blackness can turn a break into a stressful experience. From subtle looks to assumptions based on race, these experiences remind us of the persistent biases that exist even in casual or public settings. In my own travels with my children, I have noticed that the way people initially engage with us can be tinged with preconceived notions. This can be in the form of stares, hesitant customer service interactions, or outright dismissive attitudes, which affect how safe and welcome we feel in new spaces. It's exhausting to constantly assert our humanity—not just as travelers but as mothers devoted to our children’s well-being and happiness. However, sharing these experiences within communities like #travelingwhileblack and #momlife creates a supportive network. We uplift one another by affirming that while these encounters are painful and frustrating, they are survivable. It is empowering to connect with others who understand the unique intersection of race and parenthood. Moreover, traveling can also teach resilience and the importance of self-care in the face of anti-Blackness. Preparing mentally for potential microaggressions, seeking out inclusive destinations, and embracing moments of joy despite adversity help reclaim the travel experience for ourselves and our children. For other Black moms who travel, remember: your feelings are valid, and you deserve respect and kindness wherever you go. Advocating for yourselves and your families amid these challenges not only strengthens your resolve but also builds a path for future travelers to experience a more inclusive world.
