Attending the Spot Prawn Festival at False Creek Fishermen’s Wharf was one of the most memorable culinary experiences I've had in Vancouver. The atmosphere right on the waterfront made it special — even with typical spring weather, the festival went on rain or shine. What really stood out was the way the event combined a lively community spirit with exquisite food. Watching talented chefs from top restaurants like Blue Water Café and Joe Fortes demonstrate their techniques at the live cooking stage gave a deeper appreciation for BC Spot Prawns, known for their sweeter and richer flavor compared to imported counterparts. One thing I especially appreciated was the variety of ways to enjoy spot prawns — whether grabbing a warm bowl of seafood chowder with fresh bread for a modest price or indulging in the exclusive brunch tasting menu featuring seven distinct prawn dishes paired expertly with local wines and beers. The grazing-style brunch allowed for sampling new flavors while mingling with other food lovers — a perfect weekend gathering. Aside from the taste and festivities, knowing the festival supports meaningful causes like mentorship and sustainability in BC’s food community added immense value to my participation. It felt great to contribute to a cause enhancing future chefs’ education and promoting sustainable seafood practices. If you love seafood, or simply want to experience an authentic local food festival, mark your calendar for this annual May event and book early. It’s a fantastic way to support local chefs, enjoy fresh, wild-caught seafood, and soak in the beautiful waterfront views of False Creek.
