Things I wish I knew Being a FIRST gen Equestrian

These are some things I have learned over the years of being a first generation horsewoman. These are a couple of things I wish I knew before entering the equestrian world! It’s going to be hard, but it’s going to pay off, make it count.

If you have any questions or want more context like this let me know! Let’s support each other ❤️🐴

... Read moreStepping into the world of horses when you're a first-generation equestrian can feel like navigating a whole new universe. There's so much to learn, and often, you end up learning things the hard way! I remember feeling overwhelmed at the start, wishing I had a roadmap. But looking back, every challenge was a lesson, and I’ve gathered some insights I wish I knew from day one, especially for anyone else passionate about horses and just starting out. One of the most crucial pieces of advice I can offer is to actively seek out a good teacher or mentor. It's easy to get caught up with the first person available, but a truly great instructor will not only teach you to ride but also to understand your horse. They’ll emphasize safety, proper communication, and horse welfare above all else. Look for someone patient, who explains the 'why' behind their methods, and whose horses are happy and well-cared for. Don't be afraid to try different trainers until you find that special connection, because the foundation you build with a knowledgeable guide is invaluable. Beyond instruction, it’s vital to learn to trust your gut. Horses have a unique way of communicating, and sometimes, my intuition was my best guide. If something feels off, whether it’s a situation, a piece of equipment, or even advice, pay attention to that feeling. Alongside this, treasure those trustworthy guides – not just teachers, but experienced horsemen and horsewomen in your barn or community who offer genuine support and wisdom. They've often seen it all and can provide a grounded perspective when you’re facing a new challenge with your horse. To truly grow, you have to get out of your comfort zone. This might mean trying a new discipline, attending clinics, or even just working on groundwork that feels difficult. Every new experience, even the slightly scary ones, expands your knowledge and deepens your connection with horses. I've learned so much just by observing, asking questions, and being open to different ways of doing things. The equestrian journey is one of continuous learning, and embracing that curiosity will serve you well. Remember, you are your horse's voice. They can't speak for themselves, so it's up to you to advocate for their comfort, health, and well-being. This means understanding their body language, recognizing signs of pain or discomfort, and speaking up if you feel something isn't right for them, whether it's their saddle fit, diet, or training approach. Also, surrounding yourself with other horsemen and horsewomen is incredibly enriching. A supportive community can offer encouragement, shared wisdom, and even opportunities to ride different horses, which significantly broadens your experience and horsemanship skills. Each horse teaches you something new about balance, timing, and communication. Finally, and perhaps most importantly, there is no timeline for equestrian progress. It's easy to look at others and compare your journey to theirs, especially when you're starting from scratch. But every horse and rider pair is unique. Focus on your own growth, celebrate the small victories, and cherish the bond you're building with your horse. The journey is about connection, respect, and enjoying every moment spent with these magnificent animals, not about reaching some arbitrary finish line. Embrace the process, and you'll find immense joy and fulfillment.
