I still remember waking up at 5am for weights, running on black coffee and pre-practice nerves, then straight into class, study hall, practice again… and doing it all over the next day.

Being a student athlete taught me how to push through when I was tired, how to show up when I didn’t want to, and how to prioritize even when it felt like I had zero time.

Now? I’m not sprinting suicides or juggling 6am film sessions anymore, but the habits stuck.

I still plan my day like it’s game day.

I still fuel with purpose.

I still train with intention.

And most of all — I still chase growth like I’ve got something to prove.

Basketball gave me the structure.

Life taught me how to use it.

This meant meticulously planning my schedule, almost a form of time-blocking, ensuring I fit in classes, study hall, practices, and recovery. There was no room for procrastination; every minute counted. The OCR insight about "D1 taught me discipline... but lifestyle made it sustainable" truly resonates. Being a Division 1 athlete, or any dedicated student athlete, throws you into an environment where excuses simply don't exist. You learn to fueling your body with purpose, understanding that performance directly correlates with what you eat. For me, basketball wasn't just a sport; it was a rigorous training ground for life, teaching me the intrinsic value of every effort. What made these habits sustainable long after I hung up my jersey? It was the realization that this wasn't just about sports performance. It was about creating an optimal condition for *my life*. The same mental fortitude I used to sprint suicides, I now apply to challenging work projects. The team mindset I learned on the court, understanding how every individual contributes to a larger goal, helps me collaborate effectively in my career and personal life. It's about maintaining that internal drive to chase growth, always seeking to improve, just like I had something to prove on game day. For anyone looking to cultivate similar discipline, whether you're an aspiring athlete or just trying to master your daily life, start small. Build a routine that prioritizes what matters most to you. Practice showing up even on days you'd rather not – start with 15 minutes of an activity, and often, the momentum will carry you through. Think about fueling your body and mind with what truly nourishes them. As a college student, I’ve definitely become more disciplined than I was in high school. I think a big part of that is pushing myself to grow and do my best. It also helps that in college, you get to take more classes that align with your interests, which makes staying motivated so much easier.
