Stop Calling it a Gross Habit

1/4 Edited to

... Read moreLiving with dermatillomania often feels isolating because many people misunderstand it as just a bad habit or poor self-control. Personally, I found that shedding the stigma of calling it a "gross habit" made a significant difference in my journey towards acceptance and healing. Dermatillomania, also known as skin-picking disorder, is a form of body-focused repetitive behavior frequently connected with anxiety, OCD, and ADHD. It's not about hygiene or neatness but instead a coping mechanism for stress or overwhelming emotions. Many who experience this condition use skin picking as a form of stimulus or “stim,” which provides temporary relief but can lead to skin damage and emotional distress. Awareness of this can foster empathy among friends, family, and even healthcare providers. In my experience, recognizing the triggers—be they anxiety, stress, or boredom—and learning healthier ways to manage those feelings was crucial. Some alternatives include engaging in sensory activities such as holding a stress ball, practicing mindfulness, or taking up hobbies that keep the hands busy. Cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), especially habit reversal training, can be highly beneficial in addressing these behaviors. If you or someone you know struggles with dermatillomania, remember that it is a complex condition tied deeply to mental health. Avoiding judgmental language and seeking professional help can make a world of difference. Sharing stories and building supportive communities also helps break down the shame and encourages a path to recovery.
