A Letter To Myself

To My Younger Self, I See You Now.

Not the version everyone else saw. Not the smiling girl, the funny one, the one who kept the peace and wore her pain like invisible thread stitched beneath her skin.

I see the child who was told cruel things by the person who should have protected her most.

I see the little girl who learned too early that love could come dressed as criticism, that home could feel like a hall of mirrors where every reflection was distorted until you forgot your own shape.

I see the way you became an expert at scanning faces before speaking. The way you listened for footsteps, for sighs, for changes in someone’s voice, trying to predict the weather inside another person’s heart before deciding whether it was safe to exist.

You became so good at surviving that everyone mistook it for maturity.

They called you independent.

They called you resilient.

They called you an old soul.

No one stopped to wonder why a little girl knew how to comfort everyone except herself.

No one asked why you apologized for things that weren’t your fault.

No one noticed that you celebrated every tiny kindness because you had grown so used to expecting none.

You spent years believing that if you could just become easier to love, people would finally choose you.

So you became quieter.

Kinder.

More helpful.

Less needy.

You folded pieces of yourself into smaller and smaller shapes until you could fit inside everyone else’s expectations.

And still, it never felt like enough.

You carried guilt that didn’t belong to you.

You carried shame that had someone else’s fingerprints all over it.

You carried loneliness into crowded rooms because no one could see the war you were fighting beneath your smile.

You thought something inside you must be broken.

But little one…

You were never broken.

You were adapting to a world that asked a child to carry burdens far too heavy for her small shoulders.

You weren’t too emotional.

You were carrying emotions no child should have had to carry alone.

You weren’t too sensitive.

You were surviving wounds that invisible children are expected to survive quietly.

You weren’t hard to love.

You were simply surrounded by people who couldn’t love you in the ways you deserved.

I know you still wonder whether it really happened the way you remember.

Trauma has a cruel way of teaching children to cross-examine themselves instead of the people who hurt them.

You became your own harshest witness.

Questioning every memory.

Explaining away every wound.

Making excuses for people who never apologized.

You learned to doubt your own reality because believing yourself felt more dangerous than betraying yourself.

But I believe you.

Every memory your body still carries.

Every fear that still wakes you in the middle of the night.

Every ache you could never quite put into words.

I believe you.

And more importantly…

I believe in you.

You grew into someone whose heart remained astonishingly gentle after everything it endured.

That is not weakness.

That is sacred.

You became the person who notices the lonely child in every room because you remember what it felt like to hope someone would notice you.

You became the safe place you never had.

And I know sometimes you’re angry about that.

You shouldn’t have had to become your own rescuer.

Someone else should have come.

Someone else should have stood between you and the words that cut so deeply.

Someone else should have said, “Enough.”

I’m sorry they didn’t.

I’m sorry you spent so many years believing your worth could be measured by how little space you took up.

I’m sorry no one taught you that your needs were never an inconvenience.

I’m sorry the child in you learned to whisper when she deserved to sing.

But listen to me now.

You survived.

Not because you were untouched.

Not because it didn’t hurt.

Not because you’ve healed every wound.

You survived because somewhere beneath all the fear, all the grief, all the self-doubt, there remained a tiny, stubborn spark that refused to let the darkness convince you it was all there would ever be.

I am that spark, grown older.

And you are the reason I exist.

Every boundary I set is for you.

Every truth I speak is for you.

Every time I choose peace instead of chaos, kindness instead of cruelty, compassion instead of shame…

I am reaching backward through time to hold your hand.

You don’t have to disappear anymore.

You don’t have to earn love anymore.

You don’t have to prove that your pain was real.

I see you now.

Completely.

Without excuses.

Without conditions.

Without asking you to become anyone other than exactly who you are.

And if I could tell you only one thing, it would be this:

None of what happened to you became your identity.

It became your story.

Stories can wound us.

But they can also become the very thing that leads us home.

Come home now.

I’ve been waiting for you.

Love,

The woman who never stopped looking for you.

... Read moreWriting a letter to my younger self has always been a powerful healing exercise for me. It forces me to acknowledge the pain and struggles I endured during my childhood—times when love and safety felt conditional or confusing. Like the letter, I recognized how trauma can teach us to doubt our own memories and question our worth, leaving invisible scars that shape our emotional world for years. One thing I've learned through this process is the importance of validating those vulnerable emotions that once felt too heavy to carry alone. It’s so easy to dismiss feelings as being 'too sensitive' or 'too emotional,' especially when we grow up in environments where survival means shrinking ourselves. But the truth is, our feelings are valid and deserving of care—carrying emotions no child should have to bear is a heavy burden, and recognizing this is the first step toward healing. Another key insight is the transformation of those childhood wounds into sources of strength and compassion. As the letter beautifully expresses, surviving trauma does not mean being broken; it means adapting and growing with an astonishing gentleness. This gentle heart then becomes a safe place not only for ourselves but for others who might also feel unseen or unheard. I’ve also realized how vital it is to set firm boundaries and speak truths that protect our well-being. In my own journey, making choices that prioritized peace, kindness, and self-compassion allowed me to reclaim power that was once taken by shame and self-doubt. Reaching back to support the younger self within us is a courageous act of self-love and defiance against the pain that tried to define us. If I could give advice based on this letter, it would be: never let your past traumas become your identity. Instead, let them inform your story—the story of resilience, survival, and hope. Healing is not a linear path, but every small step of kindness to oneself leads closer to a place of peace. For anyone who carries hidden wounds, remember that you are not alone, and your true worth is not determined by how much space you take up but by simply being who you are.

I’m so sorry you were not cared for the proper way growing up. None of that was your fault! I hope you are cared for now by a loving family of your own. ❤️🙏❤️
