Plants you MUST propagate in water 💦🌱✂️

6/12 Edited to

... Read moreWhen I first started propagating plants in water, I was amazed at how quickly roots would sprout from cuttings, especially with plants like Pothos and Tradescantia. For beginners, choosing plants that root easily in water makes the process rewarding and less intimidating. For example, Pothos cuttings can root in as little as a week when snipped just below a node and placed in water. It's vital to change the water weekly to prevent stagnation and encourage healthy root development. With Monstera Deliciosa, the key is to cut below a node that has an aerial root attached. This helps the new roots grow faster and stronger compared to rooting directly in soil. I personally swap out the water twice a week when propagating philodendrons such as Heartleaf or Brasil, since clean water minimizes the chance of bacterial growth. Tradescantia is an incredibly fast grower in water propagation. You can fill a jar with multiple cuttings and within days see roots forming, which leads to a lush, bushy plant. English Ivy also roots well in water when you take 4-inch cuttings and submerge the nodes. In my experience, roots appear within 10 to 14 days. Coleus is another favorite because of its colorful foliage and rapid growth—a single stem cutting can quickly multiply into many plants in just one season. When propagating, removing lower leaves helps prevent rot and keeps the water fresh. One tip that really helped me stay on top of propagation projects is using a plant tracking tool like the Plant Flow Tool mentioned. It allows you to identify plants, set reminders for watering or swapping propagation water, and keep your houseplants thriving long term. Overall, water propagation is a fun, low-cost way to expand your plant collection with minimal effort. It’s exciting to watch roots explode and see new plants flourish, making it a great hobby for beginner and experienced plant lovers alike.
