I used to think if I stayed busy, I was doing something right.
Running around, checking boxes, doing all the things.
But let’s be real…
Was I actually growing?
Or just staying in motion to feel productive?
Because there’s a difference.
You can:
👉 Work all day
👉 Stay overwhelmed
👉 Keep repeating the same habits
…and still not move forward.
Real progress looks different:
✔ Intentional decisions
✔ Focused actions
✔ Doing what actually moves the needle
Everything that keeps you busy isn’t building you.
So now I ask myself:
Is this helping me grow… or just keeping me occupied?
Move with purpose. Not just motion.😎

But like the famous quote by Alfred A. Montapert points out, “A rocking horse keeps moving but does not make any progress.” I realized that mindless motion, no matter how constant, doesn't equate to actual growth or progress.
Over time, I learned to differentiate between motion and genuine progress. Staying overwhelmed by endless to-dos only left me exhausted and stuck in the same place. Instead, focusing on intentional decisions helped me prioritize tasks that truly mattered.
Here’s what helped me shift from busywork to effective work:
1. **Set Clear Goals:** Define what growth means for you. What specific outcomes move you forward?
2. **Prioritize Actions that Move the Needle:** Focus on tasks that have real impact, not just urgent but trivial ones.
3. **Avoid Habitual Busyness:** Constantly doing the same activities without assessing their effectiveness keeps you stuck.
4. **Reflect Regularly:** Ask yourself, “Is this helping me grow or just keeping me occupied?” This simple question refocuses your energy on meaningful productivity.
5. **Embrace Intentional Pauses:** Sometimes stepping back, planning, and reevaluating is more productive than nonstop motion.
By making these adjustments, I not only regained control over my time but also witnessed genuine growth in my personal and professional life. Remember, being busy isn’t a badge of honor; being effective is. The difference lies in moving with purpose, not just motion.
