Most people don’t know how to apologize

6 days agoEdited to

... Read moreApologizing is more than just saying "sorry"—it's about sincerely acknowledging the impact of your actions and showing real commitment to change. From personal experience, one of the toughest but most crucial parts of apologizing is owning the exact mistake without vague phrasing. For example, instead of saying "sorry if I upset you," saying "I'm sorry I interrupted you" can make a huge difference. It shows that you truly understand what went wrong and respect the other person's feelings. Another challenge is resisting the urge to explain or defend yourself immediately after apologizing. I've found that when I jump in with "sorry, but...," it usually undermines the apology and shifts attention away from the person I hurt. Giving space to the apology before sharing your perspective often helps the other person feel heard and valued. However, words alone aren’t enough. Demonstrating your commitment to change through consistent actions after the apology is critical. In my experience, repeating the same mistakes despite apologies causes trust to erode quickly. That’s where journaling tools, like Psyfy’s reflective journal, offer huge benefits. By writing down thoughts and emotions first, you can clarify your intentions and avoid misunderstandings before reaching out. This method has helped me pause, reflect, and approach difficult conversations with empathy and clarity. For anyone struggling with how to apologize genuinely, combining these steps—specific acknowledgment, withholding defenses, and proving change—creates a strong foundation for healing and stronger relationships.
