This is why I always say:

It’s not about being cuddly.

It’s about feeling safe.

Davy came to us at 2 years old, the most reserved chin we’ve ever met.

These clips are just a month apart — March vs. April — but the difference is huge.

If your chin isn’t cuddly right now, don’t panic.

Trust is built in tiny moments like these.

Give them time. Go slow. Be confident.

... Read moreIt's so common to feel a bit disheartened when your chinchilla isn't rushing into your arms for cuddles, right? I totally get it! When I first brought Davy home, I had visions of a fluffy little friend snuggling up, but he was so reserved. This journey taught me that with chinchillas, it's truly not about forcing cuddles, but about creating an environment where they feel completely safe and secure. Many people wonder, 'are chinchillas naturally cuddly?' and often the answer is no, at least not in the way a dog or cat might be. Chinchillas are prey animals, so their natural instinct is to be wary and quick to escape. This means they often perceive large, fast movements as a threat. So, if your chinchilla doesn't want to cuddle right away, please don't take it personally! It's just their innate wiring. The key, as I learned with Davy, is to focus on building trust. How do you do that? It starts with their environment. Make sure their cage is a safe haven with plenty of hiding spots. When you approach, do so slowly and calmly. Avoid sudden movements or loud noises. For Davy, simply sitting quietly near his cage and talking to him in a soft voice made a huge difference. He began associating my presence with peace, not fear. When it comes to interacting directly, be patient. Offer treats like a tiny piece of plain oat or a rose hip from an open palm, letting them come to you. Don't chase them around the cage. Floor time in a chinchilla-proofed room can also be a wonderful bonding tool. Instead of trying to pick them up immediately, let them explore and then gently offer your hand as a resting spot or a bridge. I found that Davy eventually started climbing on my lap during these sessions, not for cuddles necessarily, but because he felt secure enough to use me as part of his playground. Another common question is 'do chinchillas need a friend?' While some chinchillas can live happily in pairs or groups, bonding with your human family is also incredibly important. The bond you build through consistent, gentle interaction is what makes them feel truly at home. Just like the OCR pointed out, 'Trust does' come first. Remember the advice: 'Be patient. Be gentle. Be confident. Give it time.' It perfectly sums up the chinchilla bonding process. My experience with Davy, going from trembling fear during foot care to comfortable exploration in just a month, really showed me the power of these principles. He might not be a 'cuddle buddy' in the traditional sense, but the affection and trust we've built are far more rewarding. It’s about letting them dictate the pace and respecting their boundaries. Your chinchilla will show you love in their own way, once they feel truly safe with you.
