Why is it always at night 😅

2025/1/26 Edited to

... Read moreIt's literally "Me every night" dealing with my dog's endless energy once the sun goes down! If your furry friend seems "to be full of energy" just when you're ready to wind down, you're definitely not alone. I used to wonder, "why does my dog have so much energy at night?" and "why do dogs stay up at night?" It can be super frustrating when you're craving some peace and quiet, and your pup is bouncing off the walls. But there are usually clear reasons behind this late-night exuberance, and thankfully, lots of ways we can help them settle down. One of the biggest culprits I've found is a lack of sufficient physical and mental stimulation during the day. Just like kids, dogs need to burn off steam! If your dog isn't getting enough walks, play sessions, or engaging activities, they'll save that pent-up energy for when things get quiet — which often means evening zoomies. My dog, for example, used to get super restless if we skipped our afternoon park visit. Think about it: if they've napped all day, they're going to be wide awake when "she decides" it's playtime, even if it's 10 PM! Another factor can be their internal clock. Dogs are crepuscular by nature, meaning they're often most active during dawn and dusk. While most domesticated dogs adapt to our human schedules, some inherent tendencies can still surface. Puppies, especially, are notorious for their bursts of energy, often having a "witching hour" in the evening. Older dogs, on the other hand, might have disrupted sleep patterns due to discomfort or cognitive decline, leading to nighttime wandering or restlessness. So, what can we do to help our energetic pups (and ourselves!) get some rest? Here are a few things that have made a huge difference for me: Boost Daytime Activity: Make sure your dog gets plenty of physical exercise. This doesn't just mean a quick potty break. Long walks, runs, fetch in the park, or even a doggy daycare session can work wonders. Aim for at least 30-60 minutes of vigorous activity, depending on your dog's breed and age. Mental Stimulation is Key: Physical exercise isn't enough! Engage their brains with puzzle toys, training sessions, scent work, or a challenging chew toy. A tired mind is just as important as a tired body. Establish a Consistent Routine: Dogs thrive on routine. Try to keep feeding times, potty breaks, and bedtime consistent. A predictable schedule helps regulate their internal clock. Wind-Down Ritual: Just like us, dogs benefit from a wind-down period. Avoid exciting play right before bed. A calm walk, a gentle massage, or some quiet cuddle time can signal that it's time to relax. Last Potty Break: Ensure they have a final opportunity to relieve themselves right before you tuck in. An uncomfortable bladder can definitely keep them awake. Create a Calm Space: A comfortable, quiet, and dark sleeping area can encourage better sleep. Some dogs also benefit from calming music or white noise. If you've tried these tips and your dog's nighttime energy persists or seems accompanied by other concerning behaviors, it's always a good idea to consult with your vet. Sometimes, underlying health issues or anxiety might be at play. But often, with a few adjustments to their daily routine, you can turn those late-night zoomies into peaceful slumber for everyone!
