it's probably not what you'd expect...
this is my first summer in nyc so this concept of "heading out east" for the summer is completely new to me! it feels like everybody flocks from the city to the coast for almost the entire summer which in theory is fun, but it definitely adds up...
obviously if you have access to a car, a house, etc. a lot of these expenses go away but if you're starting from scratch it can be a pretty penny to get out of the city for a weekend!
i had so much fun so it was worth every penny to me but what do you think?!

As someone who recently experienced my first summer getaway from NYC to the East Coast, I can definitely relate to the surprise of how much it actually costs to enjoy a weekend away. When I planned my trip, I gathered detailed expenses to better understand where the money was going — and it quickly became clear that transportation and accommodation dominate the budget. For example, renting a car for the weekend can easily top $200, which gives you flexibility but adds up fast. On top of that, costs like Airbnb rentals averaged over $300 per person, which may seem steep but was worth it for the comfort and convenience. Food expenses also accumulated with breakfasts around $20, lunches $15 to $30, and dinners close to $50 per person in some places. Drinks and bar tabs unexpectedly added to the weekend cost as well, sometimes reaching $80 or more per person. Grocery shopping can be a clever way to save by cooking some meals, but for many, indulging in local eateries is part of the fun experience. Miscellaneous expenses like parking, fuel, and small purchases such as chair rentals or event admissions round out the final cost. One practical tip I found helpful was to plan ahead and bring along essentials like a cooler or portable chair, which can save money and enhance comfort. Also, sharing costs with friends by booking a larger Airbnb or carpooling can reduce individual expenses significantly. Despite the high price tag, the trip’s value lies not only in the destination but in the memories created with friends — exploring charming towns, visiting farms, and enjoying scenic beach spots. If you’re new to the East Coast summer getaway culture like I was, preparing for these costs upfront can help you budget wisely and still have an unforgettable experience.
