When you love photo editing but hate being fake 🫠

2025/7/1 Edited to

... Read moreIf you've ever tried combining filters in Photoshop to create a dramatic lighting effect only to end up with a fake or overprocessed look, you're not alone. I’ve faced the same challenges as a fan of photo editing but who values authenticity. One key tip is to start with subtle adjustments—avoid heavy-handed filter application. Gradually build up effects by stacking filters at lower opacity so the lighting changes enhance, rather than overpower, the original image. Another useful technique is to work with adjustment layers rather than directly applying filters; this makes it easier to tweak or remove effects without damage. Using selective masking can also help you apply dramatic lighting precisely where you want it, for example emphasizing shadows or highlights around the eyes or cheekbones, which makes the effect more natural. Additionally, pay close attention to the photo's original lighting and color balance; try to keep edits consistent with the natural light direction and intensity to maintain realism. Sometimes replicating subtle color temperature shifts or adding a touch of grain/noise can make filtered images feel more organic, countering the plastic or artificial vibe. By embracing these methods, you can enjoy the art of photo editing to enhance your photos while staying true to the authentic look of the original subject. This balance between creativity and honesty in your edits helps you avoid the frustration of images that look “too fake” and instead create compelling, genuine photos that still wow with dramatic lighting.
