Nursing overnight 12hr shift🫶

Got two more days! Was a busy night but a pretty decent night and a lot of education for me. Also it was very cold! 🥶 #fabletics #nursing #ernurse #night shift

Hope you guys had a wonderful night and an even better day!

... Read moreIt's true, those 12-hour night shifts can be intense, but there's a unique satisfaction in making it through! My last one, as mentioned, was pretty wild but full of learning. For anyone curious about what it’s really like to work these demanding shifts, especially in nursing, let me share a bit more about my experience and what I've learned that helps me not just survive, but thrive. First off, the question of 'how many hours do nurses work' often comes up, and for many of us, especially in acute care or ER settings, 12-hour shifts are the norm. This usually means working three to four shifts a week, which sounds great for getting more days off, right? And it is! But those shift days are long. My typical night shift runs from 7 PM to 7 AM, which is exactly 12 hours. It’s a marathon, not a sprint, and you learn to pace yourself. The hardest part for me is often that stretch between 3 AM and 5 AM when your body is naturally craving sleep. That's when the coffee machine becomes your best friend, and you really lean on your team for support. One of the biggest things I've had to navigate is 'post-shift anxiety nursing.' You know, those moments after a particularly busy or challenging shift where your mind just keeps replaying everything? Did I do enough? Was that the right call? It’s completely normal, especially as an ER nurse where things can change in an instant. What helps me most is having a routine to decompress. When I get home after a night shift, the first thing I do isn't always sleep; sometimes I need to just sit in silence for a bit, maybe listen to a podcast, or even journal about my day. Getting those thoughts out helps to process them instead of letting them swirl around, keeping me awake. I also try to avoid immediately checking my phone or diving into chores. Giving myself that buffer time before trying to sleep makes a huge difference in managing that post-shift mental load. Then there’s the whole 'nurses after work' routine. For me, coming off a night shift means battling daylight and a body clock that’s totally confused. Blackout curtains are non-negotiable! I try to eat a small, healthy meal that helps me feel full but not heavy, and then I aim for at least 6-7 hours of undisturbed sleep. It’s not always easy, especially if you have a family or other commitments, but prioritizing rest is crucial for patient safety and your own well-being. Sometimes, if I've had a really cold shift like the one I mentioned, a warm bath or shower right before bed can help me relax and warm up. The beauty of 'nurse shift work' is the flexibility it can offer. While the shifts are long, having extended periods off between work blocks allows for travel, personal appointments, or just catching up on life. It’s all about finding that balance. For new nurses contemplating 12-hour shifts, my advice would be to build a strong support system, both at work and at home, and to be kind to yourself. You'll have amazing shifts, and you'll have tough ones. Learning from each experience and focusing on self-care are truly key to a long and fulfilling career in nursing.
