Immigrant Nurse Diaries: My First Year Wasn’t Easy

In 2021, I made one of the biggest decisions of my life—I left home and immigrated to the U.S. as a nurse. On the outside, it looked like a fresh start. But what many didn’t see was the emotional and financial weight I carried with me.

Back home, a family health crisis had turned into overwhelming medical bills. By the time I left, I was already deep in debt—drained emotionally, financially, and yet somehow still holding onto hope that this move would change everything.

And it did—but not overnight.

Starting Over with Debt, Not Dollars

Unlike the dream of many immigrants arriving with savings, I arrived with responsibilities. I had to send money home almost immediately while also starting from zero in a place where everything cost more than I expected.

My first financial decision wasn’t about investing or saving—it was survival. I created a budget, not to grow wealth, but to stretch every dollar. I counted shifts, not just for experience, but to pay down debt and send help back home. It was exhausting, but necessary.

Building an Emergency Fund with Every Spare Dollar

I knew I couldn’t live paycheck to paycheck forever, especially working in a high-stress hospital during a pandemic. I committed to saving—even if it was just $50 at a time. Slowly, I built an emergency fund. It became my security blanket in a world that felt unstable.

Navigating the U.S. Financial System from Scratch

I had no credit score, no financial history, and no clue how the U.S. system worked. I applied for a secured credit card and made it my mission to learn how credit works. I watched videos, read blogs, and asked questions. Each month, I paid it off in full and watched my score climb. It wasn’t glamorous, but it was empowering.

Tax Season and Financial Literacy Wake-Up Call

My first tax season felt like learning a new language. I didn’t want to make mistakes, especially with things like health insurance, W-2s, or claiming dependents. So I took the time to understand. I also explored my work benefits—401(k), HSA, even disability insurance. I realized financial literacy is just as important as clinical skills.

Caring for Myself While Caring for My Family

There was so much pressure to send money back home—and I did. But I also learned an important lesson: I couldn’t pour from an empty cup. I had to prioritize my needs too—rent, food, rest, and mental health. Setting healthy boundaries around finances didn’t mean I loved my family less. It meant I could help them more in the long run.

Investing in My Future, Even in Survival Mode

Even while juggling debt, I saw education as a long-term investment. I started looking into becoming a nurse practitioner, learning about scholarships, and attending free webinars. I reminded myself: just because I was in survival mode didn’t mean I had to stay there.

Looking Back with Grace and Gratitude

2021 was hard—one of the hardest years of my life. But it taught me resilience, discipline, and faith. I didn’t just move countries—I transformed my mindset. I stopped feeling ashamed of my financial struggles and started seeing them as part of my journey.

I’m still paying off debt, but I’m no longer buried by it. I’m building something real. I have a credit score. I have savings. I have goals. And most of all, I have a story I’m proud to tell—not because it’s perfect, but because it’s real.

If you’re an immigrant nurse like me—starting over, carrying burdens, and pushing forward—I want you to know: you’re not alone. Keep going. Your future is still worth building, even if it starts in survival mode. #registerednurse #financialfreedom #finance #nurse

... Read moreMoving to a new country is a daunting task, especially for immigrant nurses who face unique challenges in adapting to a new environment. In addition to overcoming the language barrier, cultural differences and licensing requirements, many immigrant nurses arrive with financial burdens from their home countries. It's crucial to develop a sound financial plan that includes budgeting, saving, and understanding credit systems. Creating a budget based on your income and expenses is the first step toward financial security. It helps you identify essential costs, such as rent, utilities, and groceries, while allowing room for savings and debt repayment. For those working multiple shifts, it's vital to ensure that the additional income contributes positively to your financial goals rather than leading to burnout. An emergency fund acts as a financial safety net during unexpected events like job loss or medical emergencies. Start small; even saving a modest $50 each month can accumulate into a significant buffer over time. This practice not only helps you feel secure but also cultivates a sense of financial discipline. Understanding the U.S. financial system can be challenging, especially for those without a domestic credit history. Research and educate yourself about loans, credit scores, and financial products. Secured credit cards are a great starting point for building your credit. Paying your cards off monthly can boost your credit score without accruing unnecessary debt. Tax literacy is another vital component. Familiarize yourself with U.S. tax regulations and deadlines to avoid penalties. Utilize available resources, including tax preparation services specifically geared towards immigrants, to help navigate this complex area. Lastly, caring for your financial health is just as important as tending to your physical and mental wellness. Learn to set personal boundaries to ensure you’re meeting your needs while supporting loved ones back home. Remember, your financial and personal growth is a journey, and building a stable future takes time, perseverance, and self-compassion.
