I've been there, staring at stubborn stuck-on bits, wondering if I'm doing it right. You might be asking, 'Can I really boil water in my cast iron to loosen food?' or 'Is scrubbing with coarse salt actually a good idea?' Absolutely! And let me tell you, these methods have been game-changers for me, keeping my cast iron cookware in pristine, non-stick condition. My Go-To for Stubborn Food: Boiling Water Power! When you've got food really caked on, and a simple scrape won't do, boiling water is your best friend. I used to worry it would damage the seasoning, but done correctly, it's incredibly effective. Here's my simple routine: After cooking, if there are stubborn bits, I add about an inch or two of water to the pan. Then, I bring it to a gentle boil on the stovetop for 5-10 minutes. This steam and heat work wonders to loosen everything up. Once it's cool enough to handle, I pour out the water and use my trusty stiff brush or scraper. It's so satisfying to see everything lift away without harsh scrubbing or, heaven forbid, soap! The Secret Scrubber: Kosher Salt (Just Like My Grandma Taught Me!) This is where the 'scour smartly' commandment really comes into play, and yes, the image mentioning Morton Kosher Salt is spot on! For those really stuck-on messes or when I want to give my pan a deeper clean without stripping the seasoning, coarse salt is a lifesaver. After scraping out any loose food, I sprinkle a generous amount of coarse salt – kosher salt works perfectly – into the still-warm pan. Then, I grab a paper towel or a non-abrasive scrub brush and scrub away. The salt acts as a gentle abrasive, lifting food particles and polishing the surface without harming that precious seasoning. It's amazing how well it works, especially for burnt-on residues that a brush alone might miss. Just rinse with hot water (no soap!), dry thoroughly, and you're good to go. Beyond Cleaning: Keeping Your Cast Iron Pot & Skillet Happy While cleaning is crucial, true cast iron care goes beyond that. For my cast iron pots, especially those that see a lot of stews or sauces, I make sure to pay extra attention to drying, paying special attention to handle connections and rims. Moisture is the enemy! After cleaning with hot water and my salt scrub, I always put my cast iron back on a low burner for a few minutes to ensure every last drop of moisture evaporates. Then, a super thin coat of cooking oil (like flaxseed or grapeseed) applied with a paper towel, wiped until it looks dry, protects it until its next use. This constant, gentle re-seasoning with each use and after cleaning is what builds that fantastic non-stick surface over time. It's a ritual that makes cooking so much more enjoyable, knowing my cookware will truly last a lifetime. Happy cooking!
