A living sacrifice in a comfortable world

“I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that you present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God, which is your reasonable service.”

Romans 12:1

When I read Romans 12:1, I feel the weight of it. Paul is not suggesting a small adjustment. He is calling for full surrender. Present your bodies. Not just your church attendance. Not just your Sunday morning voice. Your body. Your life. Your habits. Your decisions.

A living sacrifice.

That phrase is uncomfortable. In the Old Testament, sacrifices were placed on the altar and they did not climb back down. But we are living sacrifices. That means we have the ability to crawl off the altar when obedience gets hard.

I know that struggle.

It is easy to talk about faith when life is smooth. It is harder when pride gets challenged, when leadership is tested, or when God asks you to grow in an area you would rather ignore.

Christian leadership begins right here. Before you lead a ministry, a business, or a family, you lay yourself down first. You surrender your temper. You surrender your ego. You surrender your need to win every argument. That is not weakness. That is worship.

Think about a contractor building a house. If the foundation is cracked, it does not matter how beautiful the roof looks. Eventually the whole structure will show the damage. In the same way, if my inner life is not surrendered to Christ, my leadership will carry hidden fractures. They will show up in my tone. They will show up in my decisions. They will show up in how I treat people when I am stressed.

Paul says this is our reasonable service. That word reasonable strikes me. In light of God’s mercy, surrender is not extreme. It is logical.

Look at what Christ has done. He did not offer partial obedience. He gave His whole body on the cross. So when He asks me to give my body as a living sacrifice, He is not asking for something He did not first give.

Walking in faith means moving from comfort to consecration. Comfort says protect yourself. Consecration says present yourself. Comfort says hold back. Consecration says trust God with the outcome.

As men and as leaders, we often measure strength by control. We think being strong means holding everything together. But Scripture teaches something different. Strength is found in surrender. Growth is found in obedience. Leadership is forged in the quiet decision to say, Lord, my life is Yours today.

Every morning is an altar moment. When I wake up, before I open my phone, before I step into responsibilities, I have a choice. Will I climb onto the altar again, or will I protect my own will?

A living sacrifice looks like discipline when no one is watching. It looks like repentance when you realize you were wrong. It looks like speaking truth in love instead of staying silent to avoid discomfort. It looks like serving your family even when you are tired.

This is not about perfection. It is about posture.

God is not looking for flawless leaders. He is looking for surrendered ones.

The world teaches us to build platforms. Scripture teaches us to build altars. Platforms elevate us. Altars humble us. Platforms seek applause. Altars seek obedience.

If we want to grow in faith, if we want to lead with integrity, if we want to leave a legacy that points people to Christ, it starts here. Present your body. Present your time. Present your ambitions. Present your weaknesses.

Not once. Daily.

So here is the question I am asking myself today.

Have I truly placed my whole life on the altar, or am I still holding back the parts that cost me the most?

2/20 Edited to

... Read moreLiving as a living sacrifice really struck a chord with me because it challenges us to rethink what it means to follow Christ in an everyday, practical way. In today’s world, where so much emphasis is placed on comfort, success, and control, the idea of fully surrendering—our habits, decisions, and even our egos—feels countercultural yet deeply freeing. One thing I've personally experienced is how easy it is to fall into the trap of partial surrender. For instance, I might be consistent in attending church or praying, yet when difficult situations arise, like conflicts at work or challenges in my personal growth, I notice my heart wants to crawl off the altar. It requires daily intentionality to remind myself that surrender is a form of worship, not weakness. The metaphor of building a house with a solid foundation really resonates. If my inner life isn’t surrendered, cracks eventually appear in my leadership, relationships, and decisions. When moments of stress come, I notice how crucial it is to lean into humility and self-control rather than reacting from pride or fear. The phrase "reasonable service" challenges the idea that surrendering everything to God is extreme. Instead, it feels logical when considering Christ gave His whole self for us. Walking in faith means moving away from comfort zones and stepping daily into consecration—presenting ourselves fully, even when it’s uncomfortable or inconvenient. I’ve also learned that living sacrifice is seen when no one is watching—choosing discipline over ease, offering love instead of silence during tough conversations, and serving family even when exhausted. These small daily choices add up to a life that honors God and leads with integrity. Lastly, I appreciate the distinction between building platforms and altars. Today’s culture encourages building platforms for recognition, but Scripture invites us to build altars of obedience and humility. It’s a call to legacy that points others to Christ through surrendered living, not merely visible achievements. Embracing this posture of surrender transforms leadership, faith, and daily living from a quest for control into a journey of trust and obedience that reflects God’s mercy and grace.
