This year I decided I’m going to wear my natural hair more. I absolutely love trying new styles-from braids (my fav🤗), to wigs and extensions. I rarely wore my own natural hair. In fact, the only time I did was when I got a silk press.
While weaves are very convenient and time saving, especially with my busy schedule, I decided to take a break from it all. To my surprise it has actually been pretty easy to manage my natural hair. I’m trying to grow it out now so any tips would be appreciated 🙃.

Read moreStepping into my natural hair era has been such a revelation, and honestly, one of the biggest joys has been rediscovering just how versatile and beautiful my own dark curly natural hair truly is! After deciding to take a break from protective styles like weaves, I found myself looking for easy yet stunning ways to style my hair. That's when I really fell in love with defined finger coils. They've become my go-to for showing off my natural texture, and I want to share a bit about my experience and some tips I've picked up along my natural hair journey for anyone else looking to embrace their coils!
One of the best things about finger coils is how they really make your natural curl pattern pop. Whether you have short natural hair or longer strands, this method works wonders for creating beautiful, uniform coils without heat. It’s also a fantastic low-manipulation style, which is perfect if you’re trying to encourage growth, just like I am!
So, how do I get those juicy, defined finger coils? Here’s a little routine that’s worked for me:
Start with Clean, Damp Hair: I always make sure my hair is freshly washed, conditioned, and thoroughly detangled. This is crucial for smooth, clump-free coils. I'll usually apply a leave-in conditioner while my hair is still quite damp, almost wet, to lock in moisture.
Section, Section, Section! This step is a game-changer. I divide my hair into manageable sections. Smaller sections tend to give more defined, tighter coils, while larger sections create bigger, bouncier ones. I usually aim for medium-sized sections, about an inch square, to get a good balance.
Product Power: This is where the magic happens! On each section, I apply a generous amount of a good curl cream or a light-hold gel. The key is to find products that provide definition and hold without flaking or making your hair crunchy. I make sure to distribute the product evenly from root to tip.
The Coiling Technique: This is simpler than it sounds! Taking a small piece of hair from within a section, I wrap it tightly around my finger (usually my index finger) from the root all the way down to the tip. Once it's fully coiled around my finger, I gently slide my finger out, leaving a perfectly formed coil. I repeat this for every tiny strand in that section, then move to the next section until my entire head is done. It can be a bit time-consuming, especially at first, but it gets faster with practice! For those with short natural hair finger coils, you might find it easier to use the tip of a rat-tail comb to twirl the hair if your fingers are too big.
Drying for Definition: Air drying is my preferred method to minimize frizz, but if I'm in a hurry, I'll use a diffuser on low heat and low speed. The most important thing is to let your coils fully dry before touching them too much. Once completely dry, I might gently separate a few coils for more volume, but sparingly to maintain definition.
Beyond the styling, maintaining moisture and scalp health has been key to growing my hair out. I make sure to deep condition regularly and use light oils on my scalp. At night, I pineapple my hair and sleep on a silk pillowcase or wear a satin bonnet to protect my defined finger coils and keep them from frizzing.
Embracing my natural texture, especially learning to style my afro hair with techniques like finger coiling, has been incredibly empowering. It’s not just about the look; it's about connecting with my authentic self and celebrating the beauty of my dark curly natural hair. If you're on a similar path, know that it's a journey filled with learning and self-love, and styles like finger coils are a fantastic way to show off your crown!
