The Day Everything Change

The news came suddenly, shattering my world. My dad was gone. Just like that. I couldn’t believe it—it felt unreal, like a bad dream I couldn’t wake up from. I sat frozen, unable to do anything but cry. I was too far away to say goodbye and couldn’t fly home, which made the pain even worse.

I kept praying, begging God, “Please, take half my life if it means bringing him back.” But no matter how much I wished, he was gone, and nothing could change that.

Regret hit me hard. I wished I had called him more often, told him how much I loved him, and hugged him tighter the last time we met. There was so much I wanted to say. So, I started writing—pouring out everything I never got to tell him. “I love you, Dad. I wish I told you more. I miss you so much.”

The grief was overwhelming, and there were days I didn’t know how to move forward. But writing helped me hold on, even when everything felt impossible. I imagined, somehow, that he could hear me through the words I put on paper.

Losing him was the hardest thing I’ve ever experienced. I still miss him every day. But I try to believe that, wherever he is, he knows how much I love him.

Until we meet again, Dad.

... Read moreLosing a loved one is an indescribable pain that many experience, and it often comes with feelings of regret and longing for more time. In moments of grief, we may find ourselves yearning to express what we didn’t say while they were still with us. Writing can serve as a therapeutic tool for processing these emotions, allowing us to articulate feelings that are difficult to voice. Journal writing, letters to those we've lost, or even poetry can provide comfort and connection to memories we cherish. Studies show that expressing our thoughts and emotions through writing can lead to a decrease in stress and improved mental well-being. By confronting our feelings on paper, we create a narrative of our relationship with those we’ve lost, affirming their importance in our lives. Loss can feel isolating; however, sharing our stories within communities or support groups can foster connection and understanding. Furthermore, engaging in activities that honor memories—such as creating memorials or participating in remembrance events—helps individuals maintain a bond with their loved ones while navigating the grieving process. Everyone's journey through grief is unique, yet the common thread of love unites us all in recognizing the enduring impact our loved ones have while they are physically gone.
