Know Their Names - Day 7 James Baldwin

🌟 Day 7: James Baldwin 🌟

Know Their Names

Before I go any further,

I want to say something that matters:

I am a white gay man.

This isn’t my story to tell. But that doesn’t mean I get to stay silent. It is my responsibility to remember. To honor. To speak the names of those this world tried to erase, especially the ones who told the kind of truth that made people uncomfortable. Because sometimes, telling the truth is the most radical act of all

James Baldwin was that truth.

He didn’t just write about racism, or homophobia, or class, He stared them down and made them blink first.

He didn’t ask for permission.

He spoke because silence was killing us.

He was Black.

He was queer.

He was brilliant beyond belief.

And he was not here to make anyone feel safe.

“To be a Negro in this country and to be relatively conscious is to be in a rage almost all the time.”

Let that sit with you.

James Baldwin was born in Harlem in 1924, in poverty, into a country that saw his existence as a problem.

His stepfather was harsh. His church tried to mold him into someone else.

The streets weren’t kind to softness, and Baldwin was full of feeling, so he learned to armor himself with intellect. With language.

By the time he was a teenager, he was preaching in churches, already searching for a voice that didn’t require hiding.

He left America in 1948, not for adventure, but for survival.

As a queer Black man, he couldn’t breathe here.

So he went to France. But he never stopped writing about here.

He never stopped seeing us.

He carried grief like gospel.

He watched his friends Medgar Evers, Malcolm X, Martin Luther King Jr. be assassinated one by one.

He stood in movements that didn’t always make space for queerness, and still he stayed.

Loud.

Sharp.

Unapologetic.

Baldwin wasn’t just speaking to scholars or protestors.

He was speaking to us,

The lonely kids.

The hurting ones.

The ones too tired to explain ourselves anymore.

He gave us language.

He gave us fire.

He gave us permission to be whole.

“You think your pain and your heartbreak are unprecedented in the history of the world,”

he said,

“but then you read.”

And when you read Baldwin, you feel it.

In your bones.

In your breath.

In that place where you’re still trying to forgive the world for what it did to you.

He didn’t offer easy answers.

He offered truth.

And sometimes truth burns brighter than rage.

James Baldwin is the reason I believe in telling stories that hurt.

He’s why I believe in saying the hard things out loud.

He’s why I’m doing this series.

So today, I don’t just remember him.

I honor every part of him:

His brilliance.

His Blackness.

His queerness.

His refusal to bow down.

He taught us that love is a revolutionary act.

That rage has a history.

That writing can be a form of survival.

We owe him everything.

Say his name.

Let it shake the room.

🖤 James Baldwin (1924–1987)

Writer. Witness. Warrior. Unbroken.

... Read moreJames Baldwin remains a pivotal figure in American literature and civil rights activism. His works evoke deep discussions about race, identity, and sexuality, exploring the intersections of oppression. Baldwin’s eloquent narratives reflect the struggles of marginalized communities and shine a light on the ongoing fight for equality. From his early writings in the 1950s to his later essays, Baldwin delved deeply into the complexities of being Black and gay in America. His texts serve not only as a testament to his experiences but also as a mirror for society to confront its own biases and injustices. Baldwin famously declared, "Not everything that is faced can be changed, but nothing can be changed until it is faced." This relentless pursuit of truth exemplifies the essence of his work. In today’s context, Baldwin’s voice is as relevant as ever, resonating with movements advocating for racial justice and LGBTQ+ rights. His insights push us to acknowledge uncomfortable truths, fostering a deeper understanding of our collective past and present. The need for conversation surrounding identity politics, systemic prejudice, and human rights is more critical now than in Baldwin’s time, making his writings timeless and necessary. As we reflect on his legacy, let us honor Baldwin’s call to courageously speak our truths and advocate for those whose voices have been subdued. Engaging with his work invites us to engage not just with literature, but with the realities of our society and the narratives of those who have fought for acceptance and understanding. Baldwin’s life and work inspire a new generation of activists, writers, and thinkers to carry the torch of honest expression and relentless advocacy, ensuring that the powerful legacy of love and truth continues to ignite change. Reflecting on Baldwin’s contributions reminds us that acknowledging our shared humanity is the foundation for revolutionary love, that confronting our societal pains can catalyze profound change, and that every voice is essential in the fight for a more just world.
