Know Their Names - A Pride Series Day 4
For the next 12 days, I’m sharing the names of LGBTQ+ figures who changed the world.
Many were denied recognition.
Some are still denied a place in history books.
This isn’t for likes.
This is a reminder:
We have always been here.
We have always fought back.
And no matter how hard they try to erase us,
our truth remains.
🌟 Day 4: Audre Lorde 🌟
She didn’t just write poetry.
She wrote survival.
She wrote what it meant to be Black, lesbian, woman, mother, warrior all at once.
She gave language to pain and to power.
And they could never silence her.
Audre Lorde was born in 1934 in Harlem to Caribbean immigrant parents.
She was different from the start and she knew it.
She spoke in poems before she could fully read.
She survived racism.
She survived sexism.
She survived homophobia.
And she never let any of it stand alone.
She said:
“There is no such thing as a single-issue struggle because we do not live single-issue lives.”
That wasn’t a slogan, that was her whole life.
Black.
Queer.
Feminist.
Sick.
Angry.
Tender.
Brilliant.
Unstoppable.
She wrote about injustice like it burned and made you feel the heat.
She showed us that silence won’t protect you.
That anger isn’t weakness, it’s fuel.
And that poetry is not a luxury.
When white feminists wouldn’t publish voices like hers, she co-founded Kitchen Table: Women of Color Press, because she wasn’t waiting for a seat at their table. She built her own.
She fought apartheid.
She called out racism in gay spaces and homophobia in Black ones.
She fought patriarchy.
She fought cancer.
She fought erasure, with every breath she had left.
And when she was dying, she renamed herself:
Gamba Adisa.
"Warrior: She Who Makes Her Meaning Known."
That’s who she was.
That’s what she did.
Say her name.
Say it loud.
Say it with fire.
