Body Doubling > Solo Cleaning

This ADHD/Austistic brain cannot clean by itself. I can have tons of spoons, had the bestest night sleep, and will find myself wanting to scratch my eyes out than start my list that day. And when I convince myself to start, I’ll get distracted by something else that makes my eye twitch and before you know it I’ve made an even bigger mess than the one I meant to clean. 😅

I’ve noticed that when my partner is home and I’m cleaning this isn’t as big of a problem. I asked my therapist about it and she told me about a feature of neurodivergent brains called body doubling. After some research it clicked! Growing up and as a teen I hard a hard time getting started on homework until my brother was around. Same struggle with getting started cleaning.

With staying at home, I feel guilty for not having the house clean when my partner who’s also disabled comes home from work (my therapy knows- lots small victories to make big steps). I play YouTube/TikTok videos to help mimic when my partner is home to make it a bit easier on myself. So I wanted to try posting here in hopes it can make cleaning even just 1% lighter. 🫶🏻✨

... Read moreIt's incredible how a simple concept like body doubling can be a game-changer for those of us with ADHD or other neurodivergent brains when it comes to tackling chores. I used to dread those 'low spoon' days, where even thinking about cleaning the fridge out or tackling my messy bed felt like climbing Mount Everest. But since discovering body doubling, my approach to ADHD cleaning has completely transformed. It's not just about having someone physically next to me; the sheer presence, even virtual, creates an accountability bubble that helps quiet the internal resistance. For anyone new to this, body doubling simply means having another person present while you're trying to complete a task. Their presence, whether they're doing the same task, a different one, or just quietly existing nearby, helps immensely with executive dysfunction. It’s like their focus acts as an external 'prefrontal cortex' for our brains, making it easier to initiate tasks and stay on track. I've personally found that the 'before' and 'after' feeling of tackling a truly daunting task, like decluttering a cluttered corner, is so much more satisfying when I've had that hidden support. Beyond the physical presence, I've experimented with various forms of body doubling for decluttering and general home tidiness. On days when an in-person double isn't an option, virtual body doubling sessions have been a lifesaver. There are countless online communities, Discord servers, and even specific apps where people connect just to work or clean together silently over video calls. It's like having a co-working space for chores! Sometimes, I just put on a 'clean with me' YouTube video or a live stream of someone tidying their home. Just hearing the sounds of someone else working, or seeing their progress, helps to kickstart my own motivation. This is especially true for tasks that feel endless, like finally loading and starting the dishwasher or sorting through a pile of laundry. One practical tip I've learned for ADHD cleaning with body doubling is to clearly define your task before you start. For instance, instead of "clean the kitchen," try "wipe down counters and load the dishwasher." This makes the goal less overwhelming. Also, don't be afraid to take breaks! Even with a body double, our brains need rest. I often use a timer for 20-30 minutes of focused work, followed by a 5-10 minute break. This method keeps me from getting completely burnt out, especially on those big decluttering projects. Remember, progress, not perfection, is the goal. There will still be 'low spoon' days, and sometimes, even with a body double, you might only get 1% done, and that's okay! What matters is finding systems that work for your neurodivergent brain. Body doubling isn't a magic cure, but it's an incredibly powerful tool in my ADHD cleaning and decluttering toolkit. It helps me turn those 'time to start the day' moments, which used to be filled with dread, into manageable steps towards a more organized and peaceful home. Give it a try, and you might just find your own path to making cleaning feel lighter, one double at a time!
