Herbs We Keep Around for Everyday Body Support

Many of these herbs can overlap in their traditional uses. Mullein is often talked about for lung support, but it can also be used externally as a poultice. Cleavers are known for spring tonic and lymph support, but they’ve also been used on the skin as a wash or poultice. Plantain, calendula, yarrow, aloe, and others may also cross over depending on the need.

This chart is a simple starting point, not a hard rulebook. Herbs often support the body in more than one way, because plants did not consult a filing cabinet before growing.

... Read moreFrom my personal herbal journey, I've found that keeping a selection of herbs such as mullein, cleavers, plantain, and calendula at home provides a wealth of natural support for everyday body needs. For example, mullein is excellent for respiratory health—using it as a tea helps soothe the lungs, while an external poultice can relieve localized inflammation. Cleavers are a wonderful spring tonic; I often make a fresh infusion that helps support lymphatic drainage and also use it as a skin wash to calm irritation. Plantain is a true multitasker. I've applied crushed fresh leaves directly on minor cuts and insect bites with impressive healing results. In teas, plantain supports digestion and calming processes. Calendula is another staple, renowned for its skin healing properties. I keep calendula salves and infusions for first aid, especially for skin abrasions and mild burns, and it also promotes gentle skin cleansing. Additionally, herbs like yarrow, chamomile, and aloe are part of my routine for calm and skin care. Yarrow’s anti-inflammatory effects are beneficial both internally and externally, while chamomile teas and washes help with relaxation and skin soothing. Aloe vera gel is a household essential for hydration and minor wound care. What’s fascinating is how these herbs overlap in their uses, reflecting the holistic nature of plant medicine. They do not fit into rigid categories but rather provide support across multiple systems—lungs, liver, kidneys, digestion, and skin—highlighting the interconnectedness of our body’s health. From experience, this versatility allows for tailored support depending on what your body needs on any given day. I recommend anyone interested in natural health to start with these herbs, experiment gently, and observe how your body responds. Building a home apothecary with these versatile plants can empower you to address common health concerns naturally and effectively. Plus, diving into herbal medicine connects you with centuries of healing traditions that honor the wisdom of plants.
