Daily Devotional: Bursting with Joy
"Not lagging in diligence, fervent in spirit, serving the Lord." - Romans 12:11
Today is the Fourth of July. Across the country, the night sky will soon be filled with fireworks. Brilliant colors burst across the darkness, drawing the attention of everyone watching. For a few moments, the sky seems to come alive.
Yesterday, we had the opportunity to gather with our church family for our men's and women's Bible studies. Afterward, we all came together to share a meal, spend time in fellowship, and watch fireworks. It was such a simple evening, yet it served as a beautiful reminder that some of life's greatest blessings are found in gathering with fellow believers, encouraging one another, and rejoicing in the goodness of God.
As I watched the fireworks light up the sky, I couldn't help but think about how our lives should have that same kind of excitement...not for a holiday, but for Christ.
Sometimes we become so comfortable with our salvation that we forget the incredible news we've been entrusted with. We know the Creator of the universe. We have been forgiven, redeemed, adopted into God's family, and given the hope of eternal life. That is news worth sharing.
The early church didn't keep the gospel to themselves. They couldn't. Their hearts were so full of joy and gratitude that they naturally told others what Jesus had done. Their love for Christ overflowed into every conversation and every opportunity.
Romans 12:11 tells us to be "fervent in spirit." The word fervent literally carries the idea of boiling over or burning with passion. It isn't a faith that's cold or merely routine. It's a heart that is alive and eager to serve the Lord.
Imagine if our excitement for Jesus matched the enthusiasm people show for fireworks. We plan for them. We gather to watch them. We talk about them afterward.
How much more should we be eager to speak about the One who changed our eternity?
Our zeal isn't meant to be loud for the sake of attention. It's meant to be contagious because it flows from genuine love for Christ. A joyful Christian becomes a light in a world that desperately needs hope.
Today, let your life point others to Jesus. Let your kindness, your words, your worship, and your testimony shine brightly. You never know who may see the light of Christ through you.
