Azelaic Acid or Salicylic Acid for Acne?

If you have acne and have been thinking about what would be the best serum for you, I highly recommend azelaic acid if you have inflamed pimples, mild-moderate acne, or

Post-acne marks.

But if instead you want to avoid it and keep the care mainly of blackheads, I recommend salicylic acid because it exfoliates inside the pore and helps prevent sebum and dead cells from accumulating, and with that it prevents acne.

... Read moreFrom my experience with acne treatments, I found both azelaic acid and salicylic acid to be valuable, but they serve different purposes depending on your skin’s needs. Azelaic acid, especially in formulations like the Skin1004 Madagascar Centella Azelaic Acid 10% Ampoule or La Roche-Posay’s Effaclar A.Z., stands out due to its anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties. It is excellent for calming inflamed pimples and significantly helps in fading post-acne marks. Many users report that consistent use of azelaic acid improves overall skin tone and reduces redness, which makes it ideal for mild to moderate acne with visible inflammation. On the other hand, salicylic acid is a beta hydroxy acid (BHA) known for its ability to penetrate deep into pores to exfoliate dead skin cells and control sebum production. This makes salicylic acid particularly effective for preventing and treating blackheads and clogged pores before they turn into pimples. Products like La Roche-Posay’s Effaclar Acne Medication with salicylic acid work by keeping the pores clear, thus reducing the likelihood of new breakouts. For those prone to blackheads or oily skin, incorporating salicylic acid into your skincare can maintain clearer skin. Incorporating these acids into your routine should be done with care—start with lower concentrations to minimize irritation and always apply sunscreen, as both acids can increase skin sensitivity to sunlight. Personally, I alternate between the two depending on my skin’s condition; I use azelaic acid when dealing with active acne and redness, and switch to salicylic acid to prevent blackheads and maintain pore health. Combining their benefits, under guidance or careful experimentation, can lead to clearer, healthier skin over time.
