Diagnosed with ADHD at 25

A little bit of what I’ve learned on this 8yr mental health journey.

Medical care for women is still unbelievably behind. The research and the knowledge is years behind what they have for men and mental health.

I will never not mention that when talking about my mental health journey.

... Read moreBeing diagnosed with ADHD as an adult can be both a relief and a new challenge. From personal experience, one of the biggest hurdles is overcoming the years of misdiagnosis and misunderstanding, especially for women. Many of us face a healthcare system that still lacks adequate research and awareness about how ADHD manifests differently in women compared to men. This often results in mislabeling symptoms as anxiety, depression, or other disorders, which can lead to ineffective treatments and increased frustration. One of the key lessons I learned is the importance of advocating for yourself. It’s okay to question your diagnosis and communicate clearly with medical professionals about what feels right or wrong for you. Keeping detailed notes or journals about your daily struggles, moods, and episodes can be a powerful tool during assessments. This documentation provides concrete examples that support your case and clarify your experience. Medication can help manage symptoms, but it’s not a magic fix. Along with medication, building healthy habits like daily physical activity has been transformative. Whether it’s a simple walk or a short workout, staying active improves memory, attention, and helps sustain routines. Additionally, finding safe dopamine boosters—activities or hobbies that make you feel joy without negative consequences—can stabilize mood and motivation. For example, I found music, painting, or even cooking helped me focus and feel accomplished. Lastly, understanding the difference between a hyper fixation and a long-term hobby saves time and resources. ADHD often causes intense but short-lived interests, so learning to channel this energy effectively can reduce frustration and wasted effort. Limiting yourself to a few go-to hobbies that genuinely bring lasting satisfaction has helped me maintain balance and avoid burnout. Navigating ADHD requires patience and self-compassion, but embracing these strategies can empower you to lead a more fulfilling and productive life despite the challenges.
