Nursing school break 🩺
What are you all doing for summer break?
Believe it or not, yes! Nursing school does have a summer break, and for many of us, it feels like a lifesaver after months of intense studying. One minute you're cramming for your first nursing school exam, and a few months later, it's a well-deserved summer break! It's a much-needed pause to refuel and prepare for the next challenging chapter. So, what exactly do nursing students do during this precious time off? It widely varies, but generally, it's a mix of recharging, gaining experience, and sometimes even a little bit of strategic pre-studying for the upcoming semester. The key is to make the most of it, whether that means catching up on sleep or boosting your resume. For many, summer break is the perfect opportunity to earn some money and gain valuable experience relevant to healthcare. Finding summer jobs for nursing students can be a game-changer for your resume and future career. Think about roles like: Patient Care Technician (PCT) or Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA): This is often considered the gold standard for nursing students! You get hands-on experience, learn hospital routines, and interact with patients daily. Many hospitals offer summer programs or part-time positions specifically for student nurses. It’s a fantastic way to apply what you’ve learned in theory and understand the real-world realities of nursing. Medical Scribe: If you're looking for something less hands-on but still clinical, scribing can be great. You'll observe doctors, learn medical terminology, and understand the crucial aspect of documentation. Home Health Aide: Working in home health provides a different, but equally valuable, perspective on patient care, focusing on long-term support and building strong patient relationships in a home setting. Camp Nurse/Health Assistant: If you love kids and the outdoors, a summer camp position can be a fun way to use your basic first aid and health knowledge in a less formal environment. Shadowing Opportunities: While typically unpaid, shadowing a nurse in a specialty you're interested in can provide invaluable insight, mentorship, and networking opportunities that could pay off down the line. Emergency Room (ER) Volunteer: Volunteering in a busy ER can expose you to a wide range of medical situations and help you understand the fast-paced environment of acute care. Retail/Service Jobs: Even if not directly healthcare-related, these jobs help develop crucial soft skills like communication, time management, and customer service – all of which are absolutely essential for any successful nurse! It’s not all about work, though! Remember, this is your break. It’s incredibly important to find time to relax and recharge your batteries. After the grueling schedule of nursing school, burnout is a very real concern. Spend quality time with family and friends, pursue hobbies, or simply enjoy some quiet time away from textbooks and clinical rotations. Use this period to look after your mental and physical well-being. Maybe even catch up on all that sleep you probably missed while studying for those intense exams! Some ambitious students might also use a portion of their break to review challenging topics or get a slight head start on the next semester's material. While I don't recommend overdoing it – because a break truly means a break – a little bit of prep can sometimes ease the transition back into academic life. But seriously, don't forget to LIVE a little! This hard-earned break is for you. So, whether you're working a summer job, traveling, or just chilling at home, embrace your nursing school summer break! What are your go-to strategies for making the most of this precious time? I'd love to hear what other student nurses are doing!
