rest days are when the magic actually happens

I used to feel guilty on rest days. like I was being lazy or losing progress.

then I learned about solve et coagula—an alchemical principle that means "dissolve and coagulate."

and here's the thing: this is LITERALLY what happens when you strength train.

solve (dissolve): you work out, creating tiny tears in your muscle fibers. you break them down.

coagula (rebuild): you rest, sleep, eat protein. your body rebuilds those fibers STRONGER.

the workout is just the breakdown. the transformation happens during recovery.

this changed everything for me. rest isn't laziness. rest is when you actually get stronger.

→ hard training = necessary destruction

→ rest days = sacred reconstruction

→ both phases are essential

I'm learning to honor both. the breaking down and the building back up.

sometimes we have to fall apart before we come back together stronger. the breakdown IS the breakthrough.

trust both phases. the intensity and the rest. both are where transformation lives.

... Read moreFrom my experience, embracing rest days can truly change your fitness journey. Initially, I felt guilty skipping workouts, thinking I was losing progress. But understanding the concept of solve et coagula — "dissolve and coagulate" — helped me realize that rest is where your muscles rebuild stronger. When you strength train, you create tiny tears in muscle fibers; this 'dissolve' phase breaks the muscles down. The magic happens in the 'coagulate' phase, which is your rest period — during which proper sleep, nutrition, and rest allow your muscles to repair and grow stronger than before. Without this rebuilding time, performance plateaus and injury risks increase. What truly shifted my mindset was seeing rest days as sacred reconstruction, equal in importance to intense workouts. Incorporating adequate protein and quality sleep made my recovery more effective. On rest days, I focus on gentle stretching and hydration, which further supports healing. For anyone training regularly, balancing hard training with meaningful rest days is key to sustainable progress. Remember, strength isn't just built during exercise — it's forged during recovery. Trust the process; intensity breaks you down, rest lifts you up. The breakdown is truly the breakthrough in your fitness transformation.
