Newborn Flat Head Prevention Tips….

To avoid a flat head on a newborn, provide regular supervised tummy time, vary your baby's position when they are awake and being held, limit time in carriers and seats, and alternate the direction they face while sleeping or in their crib. You can also switch sides during feeding and place toys on the side your baby doesn't favor to encourage head turning.

✨DURING THE DAY:✨

1. Supervised tummy time: Start from birth with short, supervised sessions on their stomach on a firm surface to build neck strength.

2. Vary holding positions: Alternate which arm you use to hold and carry your baby to prevent them from constantly looking in the same direction.

3. Adjust gear: When using swings, carriers, or bouncy seats, try to position your baby so they have to turn their head to look at you or other activities.

4. Encourage turning: Place toys or a mirror on the side your baby doesn't favor to motivate them to look in that direction.

✨WHILE SLEEPING:✨

1. Alternate head position: When your baby is sleeping on their back, periodically turn their head to the opposite side to prevent pressure from building on one spot.

2. Change crib orientation: Move the crib so your baby has to turn their head in a specific direction to look around the room.

3. Alternate feeding position: When bottle or breastfeeding, switch which side you support your baby on to encourage them to turn their head in different directions.

✨IMPORTANT CONSIDERATIONS:✨

1. Limit time in seats: Reduce the amount of time your baby spends in equipment like car seats, swings, and bouncers, which can put constant pressure on the back of the head.

2. Avoid head-shaping pillows: These are not safe for unattended sleep and are unnecessary for prevention; supervised tummy time is a better option.

3. Consult a doctor: If you are concerned, talk to your pediatrician or a physical therapist, especially if you think a tight neck muscle might be contributing to the issue.

The most important thing I found to help the best, is tummy time and alternating feeding positions if you breastfeed to sleep. If you are constantly feeding on one side to sleep for the whole night just think about how much time they are on that one side! It wouldn’t cause a flat spot directly on the back of their head but off to the side some. Their forehead will be uneven and noticeable if it goes on for long.

Babies cranial bones start closing 6 months so it’s very important to make sure they aren’t constantly laying down forming a flat head.

✨Did your baby form a flat head?

✨Did they need a helmet?

✨Did you start tummy time right after they were born?

... Read morePreventing flat head syndrome, also known as positional plagiocephaly, is essential for a newborn’s healthy cranial development. This condition occurs when a baby’s delicate skull flattens in one area due to consistent pressure on that spot. Incorporating supervised tummy time during the day is crucial, as it helps strengthen your baby’s neck muscles and encourages movement, reducing time spent resting on the back of their head. Remember to make tummy time short but frequent and always under supervision to ensure safety. Besides tummy time, varying how you hold your baby throughout the day helps prevent them from favoring one side of their head. Switching arms when carrying and alternating the side you support your baby during breastfeeding or bottle feeding encourages natural head turning, balancing pressure across the skull. Positioning toys or mirrors on the less favored side stimulates your baby’s curiosity and motivates them to turn their head toward that side, promoting symmetrical head shaping. When it comes to sleep, always place your baby on their back to reduce sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) risk, but regularly alternate the direction their head faces. Changing the orientation of the crib so your baby looks around the room differently also helps distribute pressure evenly. Avoid prolonged use of car seats, swings, and bouncers, as these positions may contribute to pressure points on the head when used excessively. Importantly, avoid head-shaping pillows, as they are not considered safe for unsupervised sleep and lack proven benefits. If you notice any persistent flattening, asymmetry, or your baby has limited neck movement, consult your pediatrician or a physical therapist. Early intervention is important, as babies’ cranial bones begin closing around six months of age, and preventing flat spots early on is easier than correcting them later. By combining these strategies—supervised tummy time, varying holding and feeding positions, limiting time in seats, and careful sleeping arrangements—you can promote your newborn's healthy head shape and reduce the risk of positional plagiocephaly. Always prioritize gentle care and consult healthcare professionals for personalized advice tailored to your baby’s needs.
