Finished today’s Anki review with 303 cards🎉

2025/1/13 Edited to

... Read moreEvery single day, Anki is my secret weapon for staying on top of the massive amount of information needed for premed and medical studies. Just today, I managed to power through 303 cards! But it's not just about reviewing; it's about smart, strategic use of the app. One of the most effective strategies I’ve adopted is the 'UWorld to Anki' method. After completing a block of UWorld questions, I systematically convert critical concepts, high-yield facts, and even recurring mistakes into custom Anki cards. I don't just copy-paste; I rephrase them in my own words to ensure active recall. This personalizes my learning and closes knowledge gaps identified directly from practice questions. It’s an active study technique that ensures I’m not just seeing the answer once but embedding it into my long-term memory. Many people wonder how to manage the sheer volume of information. Anki’s default new card and review limits can be quite low, especially when you're in an intensive study period. To truly leverage Anki for comprehensive coverage, you'll likely need to adjust these. Go to 'Deck Options' for your specific deck, then navigate to the 'New Cards' and 'Reviews' tabs. Here, you can increase 'New cards/day' and 'Maximum reviews/day.' For instance, leading up to my Spring 2025 block exams, I would set my new card limit significantly higher – sometimes 50-100 new cards daily – knowing I had dedicated study slots like on 'Day 8' of my rotation. It’s about finding a sweet spot that challenges you without leading to burnout; always listen to your body and adjust as needed. Organization is paramount in Anki. When I first started, my deck list was a chaotic mess! Learning 'how to create subdecks in Anki' was a game-changer for clarity. It’s incredibly simple: just name your decks with a double colon to create a hierarchy. For example, 'MCAT::Biology::Genetics' or 'Step 1::Pharmacology::Cardiovascular.' This system allows me to categorize my content logically by subject, system, or even by specific resources like 'UWorld Concepts' or 'Pathoma Notes.' It makes reviewing targeted topics much easier and ensures I can focus on specific areas without getting overwhelmed by a single monolithic deck. Finally, to maintain consistency and track my progress, the 'Review Heatmap' add-on is an absolute must-have. This visual tool displays my daily review activity on a calendar, similar to a GitHub contribution graph. Seeing those green squares light up, especially after a big session like my 303 cards today, is incredibly motivating! It provides immediate feedback on my review streaks and helps me identify any days I might have missed. It’s not just a vanity metric; it encourages accountability and ensures I’m consistently engaging with my material, reinforcing the habit of daily active recall. These strategies have transformed my Anki experience from a chore into a powerful, organized study partner. By integrating UWorld, customizing limits, using subdecks, and tracking with the heatmap, I feel much more prepared. Give them a try!
