mistakes I made in grad school I wish I knew b4

Here are the things that I wish I knew before grad school!! hopefully it helps those of you that are starting your programs in the fall!

Go with graduate student housing!! I didn’t do this at first and regret it so much! Graduate programs usually offer housing and it is cheaper, usually nicer, and closer to campus! Finding housing outside of grad programs can be hard and this was the biggest mistake that I made was opting out of it, so if your program offers it, take it!

Studying with the wrong people. I started my program studying with people that were very competitive and not supportive at all. This had such a bad effect on my mood and overall grad school experience. Finding people that our supportive and actually helpful is so important.

Taking too many classes. I over estimated the amount of work I could take on, and underestimated the amount of work a graduate class is. I think it is always better to take on less and do really well then take on too much and let your grades and mental health drop.

Only being friends with people in my program. Finding people outside of my program has been life changing! It really helps ground you and is really great for chatting about school without the completive pressure!

... Read moreChoosing the right graduate school program is a huge decision, and honestly, it can feel overwhelming! When I was going through the application process, I wish someone had laid out some common pitfalls to avoid before I even stepped foot on campus. My earlier article touched on mistakes made during grad school, but let’s delve into those crucial early choices that can really set the tone for your entire experience. One of the biggest mistakes I’ve seen, and something I almost did myself, is not thoroughly researching the program fit beyond just its ranking. It’s easy to get caught up in prestige, but what really matters is how well the curriculum aligns with your specific career goals and intellectual curiosities. Are the faculty members whose research you admire actively teaching? What’s their advising style like? I remember a friend who chose a top-tier program only to find the research focus was completely different from what they envisioned, making their thesis journey a struggle. Don't just read the website; try to connect with current students or recent alumni. They offer invaluable insights into the day-to-day reality and academic culture. Another crucial oversight is underestimating the true financial burden of grad school. This isn't just about tuition – it's about the entire cost of living. Many forget to factor in rent, groceries, transportation, and health insurance, especially if moving to a new city. It’s so important to dig deep into the availability of scholarships, grants, and assistantships before you commit. And speaking of housing, I mentioned in my original post about NOT SIGNING UP FOR GRADUATE HOUSING initially. This mistake can start even before enrollment! Researching available graduate student housing options early on can save you a ton of stress and money. Often, these options are far more affordable and convenient than navigating an unfamiliar private rental market. Then there's the critical aspect of ignoring the overall campus culture and support systems. Is the environment highly competitive or more collaborative? While some competition can be motivating, an overly cutthroat atmosphere can be draining, especially when you're trying to find the right people to study with. A supportive cohort makes all the difference, so understanding social dynamics before you apply is key. Also, look into mental health services, career counseling, and academic support resources. Grad school is tough, and robust support systems are a lifeline. Don't forget about social opportunities outside your department – sometimes only being friends with people in my program can lead to burnout. Check for clubs, events, or interdisciplinary groups that appeal to you, as these build a broader support network. Finally, a common mistake is not adequately preparing yourself, both academically and personally. You might need to brush up on certain foundational knowledge or analytical skills. Don't wait until classes start to realize you're behind. Personally, it’s about setting realistic expectations for the workload and managing time effectively. Many, myself included, have gone into grad school overconfident, only to find ourselves TAKING TOO MANY CLASSES and quickly feeling overwhelmed. Understanding the typical course load, research expectations, and time commitment before committing can help you choose a program that aligns with your personal capacity and well-being goals. Seriously, taking the time to investigate these areas before you even send in your application can help you make a much more informed decision and pave the way for a more fulfilling, less stressful grad school experience. Learn from others' mistakes (and mine!) so you can thrive.
