Check & Mate Book Review

Check & Mate by Ali Hazelwood

Overall Review: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

My Thoughts: Though I have a love/hate relationship with Ali’s books, this one was by far my favorite! I know nothing about chess so naturally I thought I would not like this book, but it surprised me. This is a cute love story that takes place in the world of professional chess. Mallory has a lot going on in her life and she never wanted to get back into the world of chess, but her family needs the money! Reluctantly, she gets back into it, and SURPRISINGLY, she has met her match, Nolan! Nolan just happens to be the number one chess player in the world! You can probably guess what happens next- sparks fly, but Mallory still has to deal with her fears/feelings about chess. The memories of her past- a little bit traumatic for her, but does she fall in love AND win the tournament?!!

... Read moreWhen I first saw the cover of 'Check & Mate' by Ali Hazelwood, I was immediately drawn in. That beautiful illustration of the couple, surrounded by chess pieces on a wooden chessboard, perfectly captures the vibe of the story. It hints at the intellectual battle and the romantic tension you're about to dive into – it’s visually stunning and perfectly sets the stage for this unique romance. Before reading, I wasn't sure how a chess-focused romance would work, but Ali Hazelwood truly delivered! If you're wondering if 'Check & Mate' is a true chess romance, the answer is a resounding yes, and it's done so well! It blends the intellectual challenge of chess with the undeniable pull between two strong characters. It actually made me want to learn more about chess strategy, which never happens! This book stands out among other romance books because it genuinely incorporates the game as a central theme, not just a backdrop. It gives the rivalry a fresh, competitive edge that I absolutely adored. Speaking of characters, Mallory Greenleaf is such a fascinating protagonist. Her journey back into chess isn't just about financial need; it's deeply tied to her past and her family. While the book focuses heavily on her relationship with Nolan, it's worth noting that Mallory's character is explored with depth, showcasing her resilience and growth. For those curious about her background, the book doesn't explicitly state her sexual orientation beyond her attraction to Nolan, but her character is complex and relatable, making her journey compelling regardless. It’s all about her finding her place and overcoming past trauma, which I found incredibly inspiring. Ali Hazelwood has a unique 'game' when it comes to writing romance. She excels at creating smart, witty heroines and swoon-worthy, often slightly grumpy, heroes. In 'Check & Mate', she plays with the classic rivals-to-lovers trope, but with a fresh, competitive twist in the chess world. Her signature blend of humor, steam, and emotional depth is all present here, making it feel distinctly 'Ali Hazelwood' even though it's a departure from her STEM romances. I particularly loved how she built the tension – not just romantically, but also in the chess matches themselves. It kept me on the edge of my seat! I've seen so much buzz for 'Check & Mate' on Goodreads, and honestly, it lives up to the hype! If you're looking for a romance that's different, engaging, and full of heart, definitely add this to your TBR pile. It’s a fantastic read that proves Ali Hazelwood can conquer any genre she sets her mind to. Seriously, give it a 'check' – you might just find your next 'mate' (pun intended!)

📖Book Review: Not in Love by Ali Hazelwood
Ooh yes! Love @alihazelwood as usual! This book features a perceived enemy and is kind of a slow burn, mainly because the protagonist, Rue, lacks emotional awareness. But I love a #greenflag guy! Some reviews say they don’t like this book as much as her others, but I kinda like it more. There
