One of the profound teachings I've come to appreciate from The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints is the emphasis on agency — our God-given ability to choose and act for ourselves. This principle isn't presented lightly; it is a commandment that requires us to engage actively in loving others and choosing God. From personal experience, embracing agency means acknowledging that each decision carries spiritual weight and impacts not just our lives but those around us. In understanding the scripture Alma 41:7, which says, "They Are Their Own Judges," I have found that accountability is deeply personal. We are responsible for the choices we make, and these choices define our spiritual progression. Exercising faith in Jesus Christ, paired with making and keeping sacred covenants, creates a foundation for a joyful judgment as Elder David A. Bednar explains. When we repent sincerely and rely on Christ’s Atonement, the judgment bar is not a source of fear, but of hope and peace. I remember a time when choosing to show love in difficult relationships required me to actively use my agency despite natural feelings like hurt or resentment. This helped me understand that agency is not just freedom to choose but a sacred responsibility to choose rightly. It’s empowering to realize that through agency, believers participate in their own spiritual journey, and it reinforces why love and choosing God is an ongoing commitment, not a passive state. Incorporating agency into daily life can take many forms — from small acts of kindness to consistently striving to live by gospel principles. This personal control, combined with divine guidance, fosters growth and aligns our hearts with God’s will. My experience has shown that embracing agency as a command, rather than merely advice, transforms how I live and relate to others — with more intentional love, faith, and hope in Christ’s promises.
