Understanding the distinction between the gender you were assigned at birth and your authentic gender expression is a deeply personal and often challenging journey. For those who identify as nonbinary or use they/them pronouns, being femme can feel like reclaiming a feminine identity that isn’t tied to traditional expectations of being 'born a girl.' This separation allows individuals to explore gender on their own terms, empowering them to express femininity in ways that feel true to themselves rather than conforming to societal norms. From my own experience, learning to embrace femme identity beyond the label given at birth involved trial and error with different expressions, pronouns, and community connections. Engaging with supportive online spaces and forums, such as those tagged with #nonbinary, #theythem, #enby, and #gender, provided valuable perspectives and validation. It became clear that femininity is multifaceted and not limited by gender assigned at birth or sexual orientation — whether lesbian or otherwise. This journey also includes navigating misconceptions from others and sometimes from within, as internalized social conditioning can complicate self-acceptance. Over time, embracing the fluidity of gender and rejecting restrictive binaries helped cultivate a sense of peace and authenticity in my femme identity. Sharing your story or hearing others’ can be a powerful step toward understanding how being femme intersects uniquely with nonbinary and lesbian identities, encouraging self-love and community support along the way.
