Exclusively Pumping

I’m 2 month PP. I’m trying to get my milk supply to go up a bit more. I breastfed for the 3 weeks and then began pumping and suddenly i got diagnosed with Mastitis in my right breast and having my son latch on again was painful and a hassle. So i decided to just exclusively pump for now. I just started pumping 7 times a day for the past 2 weeks. I’m not going overboard with trying every tip and trick that everyone recommends because i think i would go crazy. I do drink a lot of water and throw in a liquid IV every now n then. i enjoy eating oatmeal cookies as a snack. Protein meals are a must. The only supplement I take is my prenatal vitamins. I have been thinking about trying out Legendary Milk’s Liquid Gold supplements. The only thing im lacking on is sleep.

Anyway, here is what 1 day of pumping for me looks like for me. Hopefully i could get a little more with consistency.

... Read moreIt's completely normal to wonder if your pumping schedule is "correct" or if you're pumping for the right amount of time, especially when you're trying to boost your milk supply like I am! When I first started, I was constantly googling 'can you pump for 30 minutes' and comparing my output to everyone else's. What I've learned is that while a session might last 20 or 30 minutes, the most important thing is to fully empty your breasts. For some, that might take 15 minutes, for others, it could be 40. The goal is to stimulate your body to produce more milk by consistently removing it. My routine, as you might see from my pump logs, includes varying durations – sometimes it’s a quick 20-minute session, other times I really focus on a 30-minute pump to ensure I’m completely empty. The "4am Power Pump" is a game-changer for me; it really helps mimic cluster feeding and signals my body to produce more during those crucial early morning hours. Speaking of milk, before I even got to the exclusive pumping stage, I remember being so curious about the different types of milk, especially ‘colostrum vs breast milk’. It's a common question for new moms! Colostrum is often called "liquid gold" for a reason. It's the first milk your body produces, typically in the first few days after birth. It's thick, yellowish, and packed with antibodies and nutrients, essentially acting as your baby's first immunization. You only produce a small amount, but it's incredibly potent and vital for your newborn's health. Around 2-4 weeks postpartum, your milk transitions to mature breast milk. This is thinner, whiter, and produced in much larger quantities, perfectly tailored to your baby's growing needs. While I'm well past the colostrum stage now, understanding this journey helped me appreciate what my body was doing and why consistent milk removal is so important for maintaining that mature milk supply. To further help those looking to increase their output, beyond staying hydrated and eating protein-rich meals, I've picked up a few extra tips that might be useful. Firstly, don't underestimate the power of a proper flange fit. I learned the hard way that an ill-fitting flange can lead to discomfort and inefficient milk removal, which directly impacts supply. Taking the time to measure and find the right size made a noticeable difference for me. Secondly, if you're an "undersupplier" like I sometimes feel, power pumping sessions can be incredibly effective. A typical power pump mimics a baby's cluster feeding: pump for 20 minutes, rest for 10, pump for 10, rest for 10, then pump for 10 again. It's intense, but it really signals your body to increase production. Lastly, while supplements like Legendary Milk's Liquid Gold are popular and something I'm considering, always chat with your healthcare provider before adding anything new to your routine. And as hard as it is, trying to get even a little more sleep can make a huge difference. Stress and exhaustion are major milk supply killers, so finding small moments for rest, even if it's just a 20-minute nap, can truly help your body focus on making that precious milk.
