Doing nothing at work 🤫

I work in construction engineering, but honestly? My daily workload takes maybe an hour tops. Most days I just handle a few reports, send some messages, pretend to look busy, and then leave early. My boss still praises me for being hardworking and “a crucial member of the team.”

Has anyone else ever been in a job where you do barely anything but somehow look like a star?

... Read moreSo many of you resonated with my initial post about doing almost nothing at work but still being seen as an 'exceptional employee'! It's wild how common this scenario might be. I wanted to dive a little deeper into how I navigate this and what I've learned – maybe some of it will be helpful, or at least relatable. First off, why do I (or anyone) even get to this point? For me, it started with realizing that my role, while important, often had long periods of waiting for others, or tasks that could be done incredibly efficiently if I focused. I wasn't deliberately trying to slack off at first, but once I optimized my workflow, I found myself with a lot of downtime. That's when the art of 'looking busy' truly began. One of my biggest takeaways is managing perception. It's not about being dishonest, but about strategic communication and task management. I make sure I'm always responsive to important emails, even if it's just a quick "Got it, will look into this." Timely replies create an illusion of constant engagement. Also, I prioritize the most visible tasks. If there's a report due to the boss, that gets done perfectly and on time, no matter what. The less visible, mundane tasks? Those get fitted into the remaining time. Another trick? Strategic presence. I sometimes walk around with a file or a focused look, as if I'm on my way to an important meeting or deep in thought about a project. It’s funny how much just looking purposeful can achieve. And when I am working, I try to make it count. Deep focus for an hour can often accomplish what others spread over half a day. It’s about quality over quantity of hours logged. The 'exceptional employee' part, I think, comes from delivering what truly matters. In my construction engineering role, this means ensuring critical project milestones are met, potential issues are flagged early (even if I spotted them in my 'downtime'), and I'm generally reliable. My boss doesn't see the hours I spend browsing; they see the results. It's about figuring out what your boss truly values and then over-delivering on those specific points. This helps create that 'POV: You do almost nothing at work but your boss thinks you're an exceptional employee' situation. Of course, this isn't about promoting laziness, but more about efficiency and perhaps recognizing that not all jobs require 8 hours of intense focus. Sometimes, you find yourself in a role where you can genuinely accomplish a lot in a short amount of time. The key is to understand your role's core requirements, optimize your output, and manage how your contributions are perceived. It’s a delicate balance, but it's certainly made my work life a lot less stressful, allowing me more time for personal development or just, well, doing nothing!
