This was one of my most anticipated reads and it really let me down. This book felt bloated to me, easily could have been 200+ pages shorter. The number of typos, basic grammar mistakes, and a misspelling of a real personโ€™s name grated on me after a while.

I also donโ€™t read many books by men bc I find their depictions of female characters empty. This was no exception. Every girl/woman in the same age group as the main character was inexplicably โ€œhopelessly devotedโ€ to him. There was one female character who was literally described as perfect constantly. It was exhausting.

The story went on for so long it seemed to lose itself along the way. Timelines stopped making sense, characters were described in inconsistent ways that struck me as mistakes as opposed to natural human variations.

I kept reading simply because I wanted to know what happened with 2 specific characters. I wish I hadnโ€™t bothered, honestly.

... Read moreAs a passionate reader, I know the thrill of picking up a highly anticipated new release, especially from an author like Chris Whitaker. When I finally delved into 'The Colors of the Dark,' I was hoping for an immersive experience, but sometimes, even the most promising stories can fall short. My original review touched on several points of disappointment, and I wanted to expand a bit on why these aspects can truly impact a reader's journey. First, let's talk about pacing and length. When a book feels 'bloated,' it's not just about the page count; it's about whether every chapter, every scene, every paragraph truly serves the narrative. A well-paced novel keeps you hooked, driving the story forward. If parts feel redundant or descriptions meander without purpose, it can make even the most intriguing plot feel like a chore to get through. For 'The Colors of the Dark,' I found myself longing for a tighter edit that would have sharpened the narrative focus and kept the momentum going. Then there's the crucial element of editing. As a reader, encountering numerous typos, basic grammatical errors, or even misspellings of names can be incredibly jarring. It pulls you right out of the story, reminding you that you're reading a book, rather than living within its pages. These details, though seemingly small, can accumulate and seriously diminish the overall quality and professionalism of a published work, impacting the credibility of the narrative itself. It makes you wonder about the care taken in its production, which is a shame, especially for a book that likely had a lot of effort put into its creation. Another significant point for me, and something many readers resonate with, is character development. When female characters are consistently depicted as one-dimensional or solely existing in relation to a male protagonist, it often signals a missed opportunity for richer storytelling. In 'The Colors of the Dark,' the portrayal felt disappointingly shallow, with women often described in idealized, almost unbelievable terms or as inexplicably devoted to the main character. Authentic, complex female voices are vital in literature, reflecting the diverse experiences of women in the real world. When they're absent, it can leave a substantial void for many readers who seek relatable and nuanced characters. Finally, narrative consistency is the backbone of any compelling story. When timelines become muddled, or characters behave in ways that contradict their established personalities without clear narrative reason, it can shatter the reader's trust in the author's vision. A story needs an internal logic, even in fantasy or speculative fiction. Inconsistent character arcs or plot holes can make it difficult to suspend disbelief, leaving you feeling confused rather than captivated. While my experience with 'The Colors of the Dark' was largely disappointing, I always encourage fellow book lovers to consider various perspectives. If you're someone who prioritizes plot over character depth, or can overlook minor editorial issues for a unique premise, your mileage might vary. Every book finds its audience, and perhaps some will find elements to appreciate that I couldn't. However, for those who value tight editing, consistent storytelling, and well-rounded character portrayals, especially for female roles, it might be worth proceeding with caution or looking for other titles by Chris Whitaker that might align more with your reading preferences.
