Teaching your kids!

Building your own personal relationship with God is so important. And it’s just as important that your kids learn to have that connection for themselves, not just know about God because of you.

... Read moreI've always felt it was crucial for my kids to build their own unique connection with God, not just follow what I believe or what any specific religion dictates. The idea of teaching your child about God without religion might sound contradictory to some, but for me, it's about fostering a personal, heartfelt relationship rather than adherence to strict doctrines or rituals. I want them to discover their own spiritual path, genuinely and authentically. How do you even begin? For us, it starts with cultivating a sense of awe and wonder. We spend a lot of time outdoors. When my kids marvel at a sunset, the intricate design of a flower, or the vastness of the night sky, I gently guide them to think about the incredible power and love behind such creation. It's not about saying 'God made this,' but more like, 'Isn't this amazing? What do you think created all this beauty?' This approach helps them connect with something greater than themselves in a very organic way, without labeling it or imposing a specific religious framework. Another key aspect of teaching my child about God without religion is focusing on universal values. We talk a lot about kindness, compassion, empathy, forgiveness, and gratitude. Instead of solely relying on religious texts, we find these lessons in everyday life, in stories from different cultures, and even in their favorite cartoons. We discuss how these values make us feel good, strengthen our relationships, and contribute to a more loving world. It helps them understand the spirit behind these teachings, rather than just memorizing rules. Creating an open space for questions is paramount. My kids know they can ask anything, no matter how 'silly' it might seem. 'Where is God?', 'What happens when we die?', 'Why do bad things happen?' – these are tough questions, and I don't pretend to have all the answers. Instead, we explore them together. I share what I believe, but always emphasize that it's my belief, and their journey is their own. We might read different perspectives, discuss philosophical ideas, or simply sit in quiet contemplation. It’s about empowering them to seek their own truth, not just accept mine. We also practice moments of quiet reflection and gratitude. Before meals, we might take a moment to think about what we're thankful for, or before bed, we'll talk about the good things that happened that day. I sometimes introduce the idea of 'talking to your heart' or 'sending good thoughts out into the world,' which can be a form of prayer without using specific religious terms. It's about connecting with that inner voice or a higher consciousness in a way that resonates with them personally. This helps them build a foundation for a personal spiritual practice that feels authentic to them. Ultimately, I believe the most powerful way to teach your child about God without religion is by living your own values authentically. They see how I strive to be kind, how I handle challenges with grace, and how I seek solace in moments of quiet reflection. It’s not about preaching, but demonstrating. My hope is they witness a life guided by love and a connection to something deeper, and that inspires them to explore their own spiritual journey on their own terms. It’s a beautiful, ongoing process of discovery for all of us.
