Teaching your ADHD or autistic kids life skills

As an autistic ADHDer myself, I struggle both to give directions and understand them. Because of this, I know it’s very important that my kids get taught certain skills. And that someone models patience along the way.

We work on things like cleaning, baking, cooking, and basic hygiene tasks. I don’t expect them to master these skills yet, but I know it will help them in the future.

... Read moreOkay, so we've talked about the big picture life skills like baking and cleaning, but let's get real about those crucial 'before bed' moments. For my neurodivergent kids (and honestly, for me too!), winding down can be a challenge. Those times when 'we watch' our kids try to navigate the evening routine, it really resonates because so much of what they learn comes from observing us, even during those quiet evening hours. One thing I've found incredibly helpful is integrating small, manageable life skills into our evening routine. It's not about adding more chores, but about building independence and predictability. For example, 'basic hygiene tasks' – brushing teeth, washing faces, picking out clothes for the next day – become opportunities for growth. Making "Before Bed" a Skill-Building Zone: Hygiene Heroes: Instead of just telling them to brush their teeth, I'll often brush mine alongside them. This 'model behavior' is so powerful, as the image text reminds us! We can watch each other, make silly faces in the mirror, and it becomes less of a 'task' and more of a shared activity. For kids 'on the autism spectrum,' visual schedules are gold here. A simple picture sequence for 'brush teeth,' 'wash face,' 'put on PJs' can make a huge difference. Tidying Up (The Gentle Way): Before bed isn't the time for a full room overhaul, but a quick '5-minute tidy' can be a great life skill. We 'set expectations' by using a timer, putting away a few items, and making it a game. This teaches responsibility and helps create a calm environment, which is essential for a good night's sleep. Remember to 'take it slow.' It's not about perfection, but participation, and 'praise your work' for even small efforts. Preparing for Tomorrow: A small task like laying out school clothes or packing a lunch snack for the next day can be done together. This builds executive functioning skills and reduces morning stress. It’s another form of 'modeling behavior' where they watch you plan and prepare. The "We Watch" Factor in Winding Down: Sometimes, 'we watch' isn't about screens, but about observing *us*. I make an effort to calmly prepare for bed myself – reading a book, dimming the lights, doing a simple stretching routine. My kids often mimic these actions, even subconsciously. This demonstration of a peaceful wind-down is a life skill in itself. If screen time is part of your wind-down, consider what 'we watch.' Are there calming videos, gentle stories, or even visual meditations that can transition them? Or can you use that time to talk about the day, fostering communication skills? Remember the advice from the images: 'allow fidgets' if your child needs to move while listening to a story, and 'set timeline' for when screen time ends and bed begins. It's about respecting their needs while gently guiding them. Patience and Praise: Just like the original article says, patience is key. There will be nights when nothing goes to plan. But consistently modeling, setting clear (yet flexible) expectations, and praising their efforts (even small ones!) will build these crucial life skills over time. It's a marathon, not a sprint, and every little step contributes to a more independent and peaceful 'before bed' routine for everyone 'on the autism spectrum.'
